Attention, Breakfast Lovers! Family Diner Milky & Sunny Just Opened A Branch In Quezon City

Just about a stone’s throw away from ABS-CBN compound is a new haven for lovers of all-day breakfast fares. Milky & Sunny, a comfort food diner that first opened in Makati, has recently launched its new branch in Quezon City. Partly owned by Magalona siblings Maxene and Elmo, along with their Mom Pia, the new Milky & Sunny is located at The Ignacia Place along Sgt. Esguerra corner Mother Ignacia Ave. in Quezon City.

The restaurant's interior is simple; diner-inspired décor with pops of rich colors and patterns evokes a laidback and happy vibe. The simplicity of the place draws more attention to what truly matters more: its delicious offerings.

Robby Mananquil and Maxene share a bite during the launch of Milky & Sunny’s newest branch in Quezon City.

Maxene and Elmo Magalona consider themselves breakfast-ready diners at any time of the day.

All-day breakfast meal offerings like this set with tapa, rice, and two eggs range from P195 to P225.

The Milky & Sunny logo creates a focal point, highlighting the open kitchen feature in the restaurant.

The cute and catchy Milky & Sunny name is often a curious talking point for first-timers. Pia shared that it was inspired by the charm of lost-in-translation Japanese-English. “We thought of the name ‘Milky & Sunny’ together with our partners. You know how the Japanese put words together and they seem to deliver a different effect in English? We came to love Japan the first time we went, and once we did, we kept going back. We were just very fascinated with the Japanese words on notebooks, bags, etc. ‘Milky & Sunny’ also reminds you of happiness because of the mention of the sun and milk in relation to breakfast.”

Pia enjoys doing business with her kids who help her promote Milky & Sunny online.

Maxene is a certified breakfast lover; it's their family’s favorite meal of the day. She shares, “We have a tradition every Sunday morning which started many years ago when my dad was still with us; favorite namin ang pancakes and bacon every Sunday. I think that’s where the concept of this place started kasi nga all-day breakfast and we love pancakes, we love bacon—anything that has to do with breakfast we really love."

Maxene adds, “The menu started expanding, nagkaroon na din ng mga pasta dishes (non-breakfast food) but it’s still good, comfort food. Brunch, breakfast and comfort food is what you can find here [at Milk & Sunny].”  At Milky & Sunny, All-Day, All The Way Breakfast meals like your usual tapsilog-style offerings are available at reasonable prices.

Having this restaurant business makes Maxene nostalgic about how her late father, local music icon Francis Magalona, would always insist that their family be complete at the dining table. “My dad always made sure na lahat kami magkakasama at the dining table, hindi p'wedeng mamaya na 'yung iba, dapat sabay-sabay. We are a big family, eight kids in all, and despite that, my dad really wanted na we're all at the dining table because it’s the time when we really catch up and ask each other how we are doing,” she says.

With her sexy figure, you'd think Maxene is very calorie-conscious but, in fact, her personal favorite at Milky & Sunny is quite sinful. She confesses gleefully, “I have a personal favorite which is called the Maxene’s Pancake Wrap (P150). It’s a pancake wrap with bacon and cheese inside, that’s what I love to eat! I love all sinful and delicious food, kasi breakfast naman. You can have a heavy breakfast and then later on in the day, that’s when you diet na lang.” This Pancake Wrap has a delectable combination of bacon, eggs, butter, and maple syrup wrapped in an ultra-thin pancake.

Her younger brother, Elmo, admits that he and Maxene are less involved in the administrative undertakings of Milky & Sunny as they prefer to focus on marketing, “My mom is really the one who actually does a lot of work in this restaurant. Me and my sister are also partners in that we try to bring in as many people we know in the business to come and try it out, so spreading the word na rin…”

It’s wonderful to see the kind of legacy the Magalona family wants to leave behind. The desire of creating spaces so families and friends can bond, dine, and make more memories stems from the good ol’ days ‘round the table with their master rapper dad. Who would’ve thought that “The Man From Manila” himself would be such a stickler for huddling as a whole come mealtime?

Now, it’s high time you put your phone away, your soup's getting cold!
