Have A Glass Of Pope Francis’ Favorite Italian Wine At Chef Jessie Rockwell Club


When Pope Francis visited the Philippines in 2015, Chef Jessie Sincioco was given the honor of preparing his meals at the Apostolic Nunciature on Taft Avenue. As he requested, she prepared simple dishes for him, like risotto and chicken chimichurri, and even a special Argentinian bread called media luna. And what wine did she serve him to go with his meals? It turns out Pope Francis preferred a special Italian red called Negroamaro “N.0” IGP Menhir Salento. And lucky for us, this wine, along with other wines by IPhor, the exclusive distributor of Menhir Salento wines, is now being served at Chef Jessie Rockwell Club until the end of June.

Founded in 2005 by Gaetano Marangelli, the winery Menhir Salento grows indigenous grape varieties with such exotic names as Primitivo, Negroamaro, Susumaniello, Aleatico, Fiano, and Verdaca. The result are wines that reflect the unique terroir of the “heel” in the southeastern part of Italy.

To launch this promotion, IPhor and Chef Jessie presented a special dinner prepared by both Chef Jessie Sincioco and visiting Italian chef Musaro Rocco Roberto. Chef Roberto is the chef at Origano Osteria, Menhir Salento’s in-house restaurant, located in Minervino di Lecce in the Puglia region. The dinner was a veritable Italian feast of the senses as both chefs prepared six courses, each paired with a special Menhir Salento wine. Among the standouts during the dinner:

Tubettino Pasta, Fagioli Beans, Mussel, Shrimp and Pecorino Cheese

Chef Roberto’s pasta course was Tubettino, Fagioli, Cozze, Gamberi e Pecorino (tubettino pasta, fagioli beans, mussels, shrimp, and pecorino cheese), paired with a refreshing white organic wine, Fiano “Pass-o” Bio IGP Puglia Menhir Salento.

Seabass Fillet in Mediterranean Soup 

Chef Roberto’s Filetto di Spigola in Zuppa Mediterranea or seabass fillet in Mediterranean soup complemented the elegant Negroamaro “N.0” IGP Menhir Salento that Pope Francis enjoyed. This wine is made with 100% Negroamaro, a red wine grape variety grown primarily in Solento.

Grilled US Black Angus Fillet Mignon in Morel Sauce served with Timbale of Wild & Brown Rice Vegetable     Risotto & Steamed Asparagus Spears 

Chef Jessie’s Grilled U.S. Black Angus Fillet Mignon in Morel Sauce, served with a timbale of wild and brown rice vegetable risotto, and steamed asparagus spears, was elevated by the rich, intense Primitivo “Quota 29” IGP Salento Menhir Salento.

Manggo Panna Cotta


Chef Jessie ended with a sweet Mango Panna Cotta wrapped in phyllo pastry that worked beautifully with the dessert wine, Aleatico “D’Alesio” Passito IGP Puglia Menhir Salento.
