<p><strong>Joel’s Place</strong> is an experience. Because it is a <strong>grocerant</strong>—a brick-and-mortar concept that merges a grocery and restaurant together under one roof. You’re welcome to indulge in pretty much anything that has to do with food and beverage in the comforts of its homey interiors. The task of crossing items off your list and filling your shopping carts becomes a lot less mundane because of how the establishment is laid out and designed. When I mentioned this to Donnie over lunch, he was quick to jump on this train of thought, saying, “Entertainment is actually another layer of the experience. (Tip: The buko pie is immaculate. Do not miss out!) For something extra, pair a cup of coffee from <strong>The Barista</strong> with a scoop or two of gelato expertly crafted by award-winning pâtissier <strong>Miko Aspiras</strong> at <strong>The Place project, which is a marked shift from the Tantocos’ other operations. This time around, Donnie is aiming for something that inspires a different kind of energy: an aspirational concept that gently nudges its patrons to create a stronger sense of community, elevating the lives of both employees and consumers in the process. While perusing the shelves for things to take home or trying to decide on what to order, I found myself chatting up some of the staff to ask for their recommendations. The communal seating arrangements also inspired me to catch up with my colleagues in the publishing industry, especially those I had not seen in a long time.  </p><div><br/></div><p>Donnie sums it up nicely. “There are so much unfulfilled aspirations and needs, which can be attributed to hyper-consumerism. My previous business were big supermarkets; I myself was starting to get disconnected. When you’re in an arm’s race to be the biggest player, you lose the soul of what it is you’re doing. And the soul comes from your roots, your stories.”</p><div><br/></div><p>Joel’s Place is open Mondays to Thursdays from 9AM to 9PM, and Fridays to Sundays from 9AM to 10PM.
