Jollibee Chickenjoy Is Best Fried Chicken In USA!

America loves this juicy-licious, crispy-licious fried chicken!

Choosing a winner for the best fast food fried chicken in the U.S.A. is a tough call, but that's what global food website Eater just did and the winner is — drumroll please — Jollibee Chickenjoy! This proudly Pinoy "juicy-licous, crispy-licious" fried chicken beat 15 international food chain brands serving fried chicken, in a series of informal "fast food fried chicken wars" recently carried out and reported by Eater's editorial staff.

Recognizing that “fried chicken crosses cuisines and countries,” Eater locked in on 16 international food chain brands that served fast food fried chicken in America. Four categories were recognized: Bones, No Bones, Sandwiched and Sauced. After several rounds, the competition was whittled down to the Philippines’ Jollibee Chickenjoy and South Korea’s Bon Chon half-and-half. 

Although recognizing that Jollibee Chickenjoy (in the Bones category) and Bonchon half-and-half ( in the Sauced category) were fundamentally different (Eater's Special Projects Editor Lesley Suter said they were not so much "apples to oranges as apples to apple jacks"), they nevertheless eventually awarded the top spot to Chickenjoy because of its  “subtly seasoned skin as tectonically crunchy as advertised," and because the chicken itself was "satisfyingly light, flavorful in a ‘tastes like chicken’ sort of way and supremely moist."

Best of all, the signature gravy that accompanied the fried chicken matched it to perfection. "On its own, (the gravy is) unremarkable, even weird. On Chickenjoy, it brings out a whole other realm of flavor — bright, tangy, rich, the perfect complement," says Suter.   

Jollibee made its U.S. debut in 1998 and has since developed "a cult following for its Chickenjoy, what the chain calls its bone-in fried chicken, as well as its meat-topped spaghetti (though that won’t be a factor for judging here).”

Eater acknowledges that their search for the best fast food fried chicken in America does have its limitations. First, no criteria was given other than the directive for the staffers to "follow their hearts" so that subjective tastes prevailed. Second, the search was limited by geographical reach. Since no member of the staff, for example, lived where a Raising Cane branch was accessible, that brand didn’t get a chance to be part of the selection. "We hear we're missing out," they acknowledge.

This isn’t the first time Jollibee Chickenjoy did us proud in the international scene. In 2021, it landed fourth in Redbook’s list of Best Fastfood Fried Chicken, Ranked, beating McDonald’s (12th in rank), KFC (11th), and Shake Shack’s Chick’n Sandwich (sixth).
