The ShackBurgers Are Coming! Shake Shack Finally Opens Its Doors In The Philippines On May 10

The American gourmet burger chain Shake Shack officially opens May 10th at the ground floor of Central Square, Bonifacio Global City. For countless Shake Shack aficionados who have eaten at its NYC branches or franchises in Hong Kong or other countries, this latest branch is a godsend that’s been well worth the wait. I’m almost shuddering, thinking of the long lines that will materialize, and suddenly catapult Central Square to one of the most visited sites in our metropolis come opening weekend. Yes, all roads will lead to Shake Shack in the foreseeable future—and this premiere burger chain aims to satisfy.

 


The pride and dedication to ensure that Shake Shack here in Manila will meet the exacting standards of the regular SS patron is so high that the Culinary Director Mark Rosati himself flew over to check that the team has everything in place. Note that the Angus beef and even the buns are all imported, and Rosati was overjoyed with how the team was progressing with the opening.

That Rosati was here is an indication of how much support and importance Shake Shack is giving this tie-up with SFRI, the food division of Stores Specialists Inc. who are behind this Manila franchise. Shake Shack has a coffee table book titled Shake Shack: Recipes and Stories and Rosati’s name is on the cover—that shows how high up he is in the company.

Of course, the burning question will be: “Does it taste the same?” Well, on the day of the media event, we were served the Hot Dog, ShackBurger, and ShroomBurger. And having eaten at Shake Shack branches in NYC Grand Central and Hong Kong IFC Tower, I can say the ShackBurger and Crinkle-Cut Fries are up to par. Both were great, and I know I’ll be lining up soon after they open.

The Shake Shack we're familiar with began operations in 2004, but Rosati was eager to mention that the real start dates back to 2001 in Madison Square Park. Back then, they only served the Hot Dog from a mobile cart. That came as something of a surprise to discover it was a Hot Dog that got the Shack rolling. We were served that very Hot Dog and it was fully loaded with a bit of spiciness.

It was a pleasant discovery to see how Shake Shack is adding a number of menu items that pay tribute to the Philippines. There will be an Ube Shake, one Concrete (a frozen custard blended with mix-ins) that’s highlighted as a calamansi creation, and another Concrete that’s ube-based.

For burger lovers, May 10 is that one date now etched in their memory banks, as Manila goes all out to welcome Shake Shack to our shores.
