This 5-Day Korean Food Fest At Spiral Will Make You Want To Go To Korea
It’s not only the love for K-drama that’s sweeping the nation. It’s the love for Korean food, too! Filipinos can’t get enough of its rich flavors, spicy notes, and healthy profile. While there are a lot of Korean restaurants around town, it’s not every day that one gets the chance to sample the food of a Korean master chef who executes Korean dishes at its highest level.
Thankfully, Korean food lovers will get that chance as Sofitel Philippine Plaza has brought Korean Master Chef Hyeon Cheol Joo to Manila to share his expert dishes now until March 17, 2018 at Spiral, Sofitel’s flagship restaurant. Chef Hyeon is from Ibis Styles Ambassador Seoul Yongsan – Seoul Dragon City, an iconic lifestyle hotel complex in Korea, and is at Sofitel for the “Flavors of the World: Seoul-ful Gastronomy” festival happening in collaboration with the Korean Cultural Center.

During the launch, guests were welcomed by the Korean Cultural Center dancers as they performed two kinds of traditional Seoul dance dressed in their very colorful Hanboks, the Korean national costume. The Korean Ambassador to the Philippines, His Excellency Han Dong-man together with his wife, graced the occasion with their presence. The General Manager of Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila, Adam Laker, stated that out of 21 dining ateliers, the Korean station is among the most popular ones at Spiral.

To show why Korean food is so popular, Chef Hyeon took palates on a three-stop tour of Korea. He started by whipping up bibimbap sauce from scratch, then served up the actual dish where he sautéed sliced vegetables like carrots, radish, and cucumber, and finished things off with kimchi stew. An expert in fermentation, Chef Hyeon shared that kimchi has to be fermented for a minimum of ten years to add true depth of flavor to the stew.

After the cooking demonstration, guests were treated to a leisurely lunch at the Spiral buffet where they were offered countless choices of authentic Korean dishes like sweet and tangy cold jelly fish and crab meat salad, hearty Korean shrimp cakes, Korean chicken that’s sweet and tangy with a kick at the end, and did I mention the different kinds of kimchi? These Korean specialties created by Chef Hyeon will be available at Spiral until March 17, 2018.
