Best Eats Of The Week: March 19
In anxious days, comfort food, light and airy desserts, and cool drinks are just what you need
Perhaps because it’s been an anxiety-ridden week with a sharp spike in the number of Covid-19 cases in the country, comfort food was the unspoken choice of the week. We ate a lot of carbs like pasta and paella, and food that reminded us of happier days. The onset of summer also had us reaching for lighter, airy desserts and cold, refreshing drinks. Here are my picks of the week.

Chinese takeout from Chow Time
The perfect solution for those days when you just want to eat something delicious without the hassle of cooking. Chow Time has a menu of our favorite Chinese comfort foods like steamed siomai, Five Spice Fried Chicken, Garlic Sesame Noodles, and even hopia and wonton crackles (yum!). We recommend the Fried Shark’s Fin Dumplings, a classic dim sum with mushrooms inside. Send a DM to @eat.chowtime on Instagram or order online at madeats.co/collections/chow-time. Chef Parks’s Cheesy Bibimbap
Imagine your favorite classic bibiimbap but with a delightful cheese dimension. The bibimbap rice is loaded with marinated Korean beef, mushrooms, vegetables, then topped with fried eggs and an unctuous cheesy sauce. To order, call (0977) 803-0111, send a DM to @chefparksph on Instagram, or order online at www.chefparks.com. (Photo: @chefparksph)

Kodawari’s Shroomdon
I’ve always thought gyudon the ultimate comfort food with fragrant japanese rice, beef strips, egg, and savory-sweet sauce. Taking it up a (healthy) notch, this dish goes meat-free with four types of mushroom, 63-degree egg, talbos ng kamote and Japanese rice. Available in half trays good for two to four people, or full trays good for five to eight. To order, send a DM to @kodawari.ph on Instagram. (Photo: @kodawari.ph)

Wagyu Paella (with add ons) from Meat Your Maker Manila
On weekends, treat the entire family to a platter of Wagyu Paella made with graded Wagyu striploin, fried garlic, toasted steak fat with balsamic glaze on the side. As if that weren’t enough, you can even ask for wicked add-ons like foie gras, shrimp gambas, truffle salsa and, oh gosh, truffle fat chicharon. My heart is full (and so’s my stomach). To order, send a DM to @meatyourmakermnl on Instagram. (Photo: @meatyourmakermnl)

Boneless Palawan Dilis from Snackalubong
My favorite summer pasalubong, danggit and dliis are forever associated with going on holiday. If you’ve got the same hankering, put in a few orders of these extra crunchy boneless dilis, or the naturally salty, paper-thin, crispy danggit from Palawan. They’re clean and tasty, all you have to do is quick fry then serve with rice. Send a DM to @snackalubong on Instagram or order online. (Photo: @snackalubong)

Creamy, rich burnt Basque cheesecake gets subtle flavor and fragrance from an infusion of black tea. This is our favorite new version of the trendy dessert. Only by Chef Paulo Nasol of @betterbakerph. May we suggest you put in your orders early in case they run out? And while you’re at it, check out his phenomenal Cinnamon Braid Breads. Espresso Caramel Pancakes from The Sunny Side Cafe Boracay
We’ve really missed the way we could just head over to Boracay at the drop of a hat to spend a weekend imbibing the island life. And every morning would begin with breakfast at The Sunny Side Café. The good news is that the cafe has now reopened in Boracay, and for those of us who can’t yet travel, The Sunny Side Cafe’s Manila Pop-Up at The Grid is still going on. Check out @thesunnysideboracay and ask for these espresso caramel pancakes that come slathered in dulce de leche. So perfect with coffee. To order, text (0917) 707-7459, (0917) 702-2534, send a DM to @thegridfoodmarket on Instagram or Facebook, or order online at www.thegridfoodmarket.com. (Photo: @thesunnysideboracay)

Agimat Gin
It looks like a good year for new gins to be born, so we’re happy to welcome Agimat Gin, a proudly Filipino product that has botanical ingredients from three main islands of the Philippines. From Luzon, ylang ylang and wild floral honey, yutukon and libas from the Visayas, and biasong and pink pomelo from Mindanao. Encased in this beautiful bottle inscribed with baybayin script, the gin pays tribute to the “essence of Filipino cultural vibrancy.” Check out @agimatbar on Instagram or Facebook. Available from Boozy.PH. (Photo: agimatbar)

Triple Nut Sans Rival by Cipriano
This old school sans rival has rich French buttercream spread over layers of ‘makunat’ meringue, with chunks of toasted cashew liberally thrown in. Take a bite — you’ll find that it’s not cloyingly sweet, and tastes just right. Triple Nut Silvanas are available, too! Check out @ciprianosansrival on Instagram to browse through their expanded menu. Order online at ciprianosansrival.com. (Photo: @ciprianosansrival)

Bangkok street food by Michelin-starred Chef Ton at Samyan
Samyan has been around for a couple of years now, but it caught our attention again recently when it won the Thai SELECT Casual Award from the Thai Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), Ministry of Commerce. Named after Bangkok’s Samyan Market, the menu was created by no less than Chef Ton Tassanakajohn, of Michelin-starred restaurant Le Dun and Baan (which is in Michelin’s Bib Gourmand Guide). Needless to say, the food is authentic and superb. Check out @samyanph on Instagram. They have a stall at The Grid. Order online at thegridfoodmarket.com. (Photo: samyanph)

Farmacy’s milkshakes
We’ve always loved Farmacy’s old fashioned ice creams, so reminiscent of 1950s-style drugstore desserts. But perhaps you’ve forgotten they also make some of the best and richest milk shakes in town. Every glass is freshly made and very, very thick. Refreshingly cold and satisfying. Order from foodpanda, and browse through @farmacymnl on Instagram. (Photo: @farmacymnl)
