6 Tips For Creating A Tropical Tablescape

Hosting a fun afternoon get-together with friends at home can be made more enjoyable by having a themed tropical tablescape that can elevate the mood of the guests and host. The Metro Home & Entertaining team shares cool and practical tips on how you can create your own tropical themed tablescape that your family and friends will surely love.

Create a themed tropical tablescape by using elements with vibrant colors that are aligned with the overall theme. The orange glasses are from Crate and Barrel, laminated banana leaf placemats, napkins with embroidered fruits and napkin rings are from Kassa.

Provide a relaxing vibe

Provide a place where your guests can relax. Use a comfortable seating area, ideally 18 inches for both dining chairs and sofas. Feel free to shuffle furniture pieces and use lots of throw pillows in order to create a cozy atmosphere.

On one side, place a couch with pillows, and a bench on the other side to create a casual and lounge-like feel suitable for interesting conversations with your guests. It is also good to provide small ceramic stools near the table for guests to place their bags and gadgets so that the table is free of other things not used for dining.

Make use of simple silver cutlery in order to have a more contemporary look that will go well with the rest of the colorful elements included in the tablescape.

Serve little savory bites and delicious desserts, fresh fruits, refreshing drinks and cocktails.

Use vibrant colors

A tropical tablescape includes having vibrant colors. You may use flowers and fruits with complementary colors and colored glass ware. In our featured tablescape, we used orange glasses to liven up the setting.

In line with the tropical theme, we used napkins with embroidered tropical fruit designs and native napkin rings.

To have a more interesting tablescape, be creative and find things in your home that you can use such as little ceramic or brass containers that can function as containers for candies or mints.

You may use pineapples that have been carved out as instant cocktail drink containers. This will definitely be a conversation piece as it adds a wonderful flair to your themed get-together.

Use bright-colored fresh flowers that go well with the other elements such as fresh fruits like dragon fruit. Make use of little ceramic and brass containers to hold mints or candies.

Craft an interesting centerpiece

Woven materials are a must-have for a tropical setting. In the tablescape that we created, the eye-catching focal point is a woven nito charger filled with dragon fruits. The centerpiece became more interesting with the placement of brass dragonflies on top of the dragon fruits.

We also made use of laminated banana leaf-print placemats that go well with the centerpiece and the overall table setting.

Layer and contrast

By layering items with different textures and colors, you can create a more interesting table setting. Here, we used mirror discs which are usually used for candles to provide sparkle and sheen to the tablescape, and green abaca coasters for the orange drinking glasses. Creating contrast adds a colorful and fresh look to the table setting.

Keep it casual and cozy

You need not stress yourself out cooking various meals in the kitchen for fun get-togethers. If you are not into cooking, then just buy high quality ready-to-eat food like canapes, cold cuts, cheese platters, crostinis and dips and desserts such as brownies, cookie nibblers and other sweet treats from your favorite café or delicatessen.

For drinks, serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks in order to provide options to guests. You can also provide cold water infused with fruits such as orange, lemon and lime.

Apart from the themed tablescape, remember that a good and memorable get-together includes having lovely conversations so make sure that the musical background is at the right volume and does not distract the guests from engaging talk.

Pineapple and orange cooler

Get creative and turn a pineapple into a cool cup for a refreshing summer cooler to pretty up your perfect tropical-themed table setting.

To make the pineapple cup:

1. Cut off the top of the pineapple.

2. Using a knife, cut around the inside of the pineapple about 1/2 inches away from the skin to make sure you do not puncture the skin.

3. Use a spoon to scoop out the portion in the center, you may need a knife to help core out and hollow the pineapple shells.

4. Keep the scooped out pineapple pieces to use for the shake.

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium oranges
  • 2 cups chopped pineapple
  • a pinch of black pepper
  • a pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1/2 cup of sparkling water

Procedure:

1. Place all ingredients in a blender: the juice from the oranges, the chopped pineapple, salt, pepper, honey, and sparkling water.

2.  Blend ‘til smooth

3. Add some ice cubes into the hollowed pineapples and pour in the refreshing blended mixture. Give it a swirl and serve.
