Known the world over for her impeccable, intricate craftsmanship, jewelry and clutch designer Bea Valdes is an artist Filipinos can truly be proud of. Coming from a family who has worked in the fine jewelry trade for three generations, she has developed such an exquisite taste even at a young age.

Over the years, Bea has established her brand to be covetable in terms of pieces that come with masterfully done embroidery and beadwork. It's commendable how she helps elevate local materials and artisans into the global stage.

With the goal of reinterpreting its iconic Mah Jong sofa, French furniture brand Roche Bobois collaborated with Bea, to give the versatile creation that signature tasteful, luxurious aesthetic she is recognized for.

But Bea's take on luxurious here isn't one that's intimidating—in fact, she made use of denim and chambray, types of fabric that evoke a casual feel, and manipulated them beautifully to create different layers of images and shadows. The intricacy of the final product is simply awe-inspiring.

"Because the Mah Jong sofa is an iconic piece, I was hoping to translate it in a way that it would refer very much to our place," Bea shares. "So I wanted an intersection of our history and geography, so I started looking at old stamps and old packaging."

She adds, "I think if we are successful at something, it's the fact that we have put a real spotlight on craft, and I think the work of the hands and the language of needle and thread."

Watch Bea talk about how she feels about this collaboration with Roche Bobois and the privilege of having been given the opportunity to work on such an iconic piece:
