Roche Bobois x Interior Designer Chat Fores: A Bold, Japanese-Inspired Take On The Iconic Mah Jong Sofa

Never be afraid to take risks—that's one of the mantras of renowned interior designer Chat Fores. "I love color. I love prints. And these are things I like bringing into my interiors and designs," she tells Metro.Style. "Sometimes I do so without fear."

With a career that dates back to 1996, this Assumption College - Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design graduate has discovered and established that her signature style, while never boxed into one design, can always be described using the following words: elegant, artistic, playful, and unconventional.

Her interior design firm, Chat Fores Design Studio, focuses on residential, commercial, and corporate projects—all put together with traces of her bold and quirky personality, while allowing her clients' tastes and preferences to shine at the same time.

Growing up with a mom who always pushed her to do more and be more, she became a fearless individual who is always up to the challenge of experimenting and thinking outside the box.

With the aim of creating inspired spaces and designing with a fine balance of style and functionality in mind, Chat never ceases to amaze; her mastery of the formula of good lighting and color results to interiors that look more spacious and well maximized as they are cleverly planned.

"One of the most used items in any room is the chair. Don't take it for granted. Choosing the right chair can make or break the room," Chat says. "Balancing between creativity, artistry and comfortability can be a challenge in itself."

And it's a challenge that she has gladly taken on for her collaboration with French furniture brand Roche Bobois. What is the challenge exactly? It's to do her own interpretation of the premium brand's iconic Mah Jong sofa. Created by Hans Hopfer in 1971, this “free form” modular seating has been "dressed" by Missoni Home, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Kenzo Takada.

"Their furniture pieces are very practical but then they’re very different... unusual, unique," Chat says on what she loves about Roche Bobois. The Mah Jong sofa is indeed all that and more; it's more than meets the eye—it can be an armchair, sofa, lounge chair or bed, or a space in which to rest, to play or to lounge.

To complement the versatility of the furniture piece, Chat played with different types of fabric and used five antique Japanese silk Obi belts as accents; the interesting fact that the obis were from her mother and therefore holds sentimental value makes this creation even more special. With its vibrant prints, striking colors, and luxurious sheen, Chat's Mah Jong sofa will surely add a stunningly eccentric flair to a living space.
