<div><br/></div><p>The number of views and searches on social media prove that in 2022, a wide variety of trends appealed to interior design enthusiasts.  People were searching for styles that ran the entire spectrum, from minimalism to maximalism, a good indication of the public’s awareness and verve for good design, whether they were looking for inspiration or actually in the process of building homes and revamping rooms.  </p><div><br/></div><p>If there is anything clear about the popularity of interior design searches on TikTok, it’s that increasingly, people don’t mind going the DIY route, and showing their progress online.  This year, we continued to see the popularity of channels that empowered netizens to make pretty spaces on their own.  If not, to tell their trusted carpenter or painter <em>kuya</em> how to do the job.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>Let’s look back at the trends that were popular in TikTok this year:</strong></div><div><br/></div><div><br/></div><div><strong>Minimalism</strong></div><div><br/></div><p>Originally, minimalism was a reaction against the vibrant and gestural abstract expressionism that came a generation before it.  It saw its place in the world when Frank Stella showed his black paintings in 1959 at the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art, New York).  Nowadays, minimalism is not just an aesthetic preference.  For some, it is a lifestyle choice, preferring to live with only the essentials.</p><div><br/></div><p>With 12 million views on TikTok, this video encapsulates the minimalism quite well. Take yourself back to the Victorian age, or think of the stately homes popularized by<em> Bridgerton, </em><em>The Crown</em> or season two of <em>The White Lotus</em>.  Maximalism is all about richness as conveyed in textures, patterns, prints and the number of objects in a room. When Meyers made the spaces for these characters, she also made a style classic.  Flash forward to the present times, and “Nancy Meyers chic” is now known as the “Coastal Grandma” look, the term popularized by TikTok influencer, Lex Nicoleta.  Some styling protagonists in this relaxed, laidback look are the presence of abundant natural light in a room, as well as coffee tables and shelves styled with books and fresh flowers.  In this space, wicker baskets have a place, as well as comfortable slip covered furniture in light, neutral hues.
