Meet Choupette, The Chic Cat Who Declined The Met Gala Invitation

This sweetheart may not have been in attendance, but she inspired many of the occasion’s show-stopping looks

At the 2023 Met Gala, one could not ignore the cat-inspired looks that stole the show on the runway, giving the Karl Lagerfeld-themed event an undeniable Schiaparelli-esque, surreal vibe.  Jared Leto showed up in a complete cat costume, prompting snuggles from Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek.  The outfit confirmed the House of Gucci actor’s status as a scene-stealer fashionista, punctuating a string of memorable Met Gala appearances: as Gucci creative director, Alessandro Michele’s twin at the 2022 Met Gala, America: An Anthology In Fashion and another carrying a replica of his own head at the 2019 Met Gala, Camp: Notes On Fashion.

On the other hand, Doja Cat dressed up in an Oscar de la Renta gown covered in silver beads, flowing into a train of white feathers.  Completing her attire were cat makeup and prosthetics.

Wondering what all the fuss about a floof was about in the 2023 Met Gala?  Titled Karl Lagerfeld: A Line In Beauty, celebrities and designers alike found a trove of inspiration from the late German designer’s life, including his pet, Choupette (which means "sweetheart" in French), a Birman feline he adopted in 2011.

A number of people were anticipating the appearance of Lagerfeld’s beloved cat who some speculate must have even received an inheritance from him.  However, the feline declined the invitation, in favor of watching “coz[il]y at home.”

"Many people invited me to walk the red carpet of the #METGALA2023 in tribute to Daddy, but we preferred to stay peacefully & cozy at home," the floof’s Instagram post said. ”We pay tribute to my Daddy every day since his parting and we are very moved to see one more day dedicated to him.”

Despite declining the Met Gala’s invitation, Choupette still helped Kim Kardashian choose an outfit for the occasion.  In an Instagram post, the actress wrote, “Had a date with @choupetteofficiel in Paris. We then spent some time at @karllagerfeld’s office to get a little inspiration for the Met.”

With some 187K followers on Instagram, the floof has received loads of love and attention, with a color named after her (Choupette Blue which figured in Emma Chamberlain’s Met Gala 2023 ensemble),  and even starring in some editorials, most memorably in 2012 with Letitia Casta for V Magazine.

It will be recalled that Lagerfeld revealed his sentiments about Choupette to Numero Magazine, “I like being calm, and my cat is a presence that counts but isn't encumbering," the Chanel designer said.  "She is peaceful, funny, fun, and gracious, she's pretty to look at and has good poise, but her main quality is that she doesn't talk,” he continued.

Having dined often with Lagerfeld, Choupette’s meals were and are still very meticulously prepared, in “fabulous bowls,” as the designer revealed to Numero Magazine.  "She sits opposite me and eats what she has to eat," he explained. "Before she might have attacked any old prawn, but now she will only touch the four different dishes prepared for her on that day, served in fabulous bowls. Everything must be very fresh, otherwise Mademoiselle sits in front of her biscuits for three quarters of an hour giving me filthy looks, without eating a thing,” he shared.

Lagerfeld’s feline orphan, who he was known to call “the center of his world” has been busy honoring his memory through her own Instagram account, @choupetteofficiel, since the designer’s death in 2019.  She is represented by My Pet Agency, and continues to live a fabulous life with two maids who keep notebooks to log her daily activities, a driver, and a social media manager.
