MANILA -- At least two assistant majority leaders of the House of Representatives believe the double-digit drop in President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s approval rating and the increase in the disapproval rating of House Speaker Martin Romualdez are partly driven to the proliferation of “fake news”.“There might be other reasons… but definitely fake news or misinformation is, and the narrative it&#x27;s creating is basically one of those drivers.. And I think this is something that we need to also study how we can send the message across better to Filipinos sa ginagawa po ng ating gobyerno,” TINGOG Party List Representative Jude Acidre said.&quot;Lumalabas talagang walang pakundangan ang fake news, ang misinformation. So, we&#x27;ll take it as a challenge to communicate ourselves better,&quot; he added. “If we base on the volume of attacks by unfortunately some or many of the active online users, who espouse fake news and doctored manufactured videos, etc. The tendency is that the general public would tend to believe in those things... It could be partly attributed to that. That&#x27;s why kailangan natin magkaroon talaga ng sensible na piece of legislation so that it would not cause harm to anyone,” Lanao del Sur 1st District Representative Zia Alonto Adiong said.He also called for legislation to regulate social media.“Nakikita natin ‘yung culture of impunity also dominates the online space, which to me, if not regulated, would be detrimental… One thing that we all agree on is magkakaroon talaga dapat ng regulation so far as the operation of the social media platforms tulad ng Meta and many others, TikTok. Kasi we have to give truth a chance, a fighting chance,” Adiong said.
