Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News/File</span></span></span></div><div><br id="isPasted"/></div><div><br/></div><div><br/></div><div><br/></div><p>MANILA — Malacanang on Wednesday denied that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was pushing for the Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.</p><p>Palace Press Officer Claire Castro made the statement when asked to weigh in on whether the new composition of senators after Monday’s elections would benefit the impending impeachment trial of Duterte.</p><p>“Wala pong anumang balita patungkol sa pag-pursue ng Pangulo sa impeachment o sa impeachment trial ni VP Sara so iyan po ay ating tinututulan at pinasisinungalingan po,” Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said in a Palace briefing.</p><p>“Wala pong sinasabing anumang pagkumpiyansa na para mapatalsik o matanggal sa puwesto ang Bise Presidente,” she added. </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/5/12/philippines-heads-to-polls-with-marcos-duterte-feud-centre-stage-0904">Sweltering Philippines votes with Marcos-Duterte feud center stage</a></div><p>Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives in February for &quot;high crimes&quot;, including an alleged assassination plot against ally-turned-foe Marcos.</p><p>The 12 senators elected Monday will join 12 incumbents in serving as jurors at her impeachment trial, which could see her permanently barred from public office. The Senate is expected to convene as an impeachment court shortly after the session of Congress resumes on June 2, 2025.</p><p>As of Tuesday, with over 90 percent of precincts reporting, five candidates aligned with the vice president&#x27;s camp looked certain to secure seats.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/5/13/tv-patrol-vp-sara-duterte-hindi-inasahan-ang-resulta-sa-senatorial-race-1944">TV PATROL: VP Sara Duterte hindi inasahan ang resulta sa senatorial race</a></div><p>&quot;The chances of her being acquitted have just increased because of the elections,&quot; said Aries Arugay, a visiting senior fellow at Singapore&#x27;s ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute.</p><p>With a two-thirds majority required for a guilty verdict, Duterte needs nine votes to preserve any hope of a future presidential run.</p><p>With three incumbent senators already considered firm allies, there was &quot;a good chance that the vote will be for an acquittal rather than a conviction&quot;, said Froilan C.
