<p style="text-align:left">There are times when inspiration can strike you in the most surprising places, pushing you further, and doing more than you could imagine. The article was about Lucas, the son of journalist Karen Davila, who <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/showbiz/celebrities/2025/6/24/karen-davila-s-son-lucas-goes-to-pag-asa-island-in-west-philippine-sea-1813" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">recounted his trip to the West Philippine Sea to deliver school supplies</a>. “If Lucas can do this,” Michelle remembers thinking, “I want to do it too.” She prayed for a project with real purpose, and, as she puts it, “for some strange reason, I felt I had to go to the West Philippine Sea.”</div><p>That seed of conviction quickly grew. A few weeks later, Michelle and her husband, Ernie Lopez, attended a screening of <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/showbiz/movies-series/2025/7/3/pinoy-documentary-food-delivery-wins-in-new-zealand-s-doc-edge-festival-1908" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><em>Food Delivery</em>, a Filipino documentary that had won acclaim in New Zealand.</a> The film, which explored the challenges of life in the West Philippine Sea, moved her even more. “When we stayed for the Q&amp;A, I felt compelled to stand and thank the director, Baby Ruth, and to ask Commodore Tarriela questions,” she recalls. Inspired by Lucas’ school supply drive, she and Ernie resolved to bring essentials to the remote island of Pag-asa, where Filipino families live under the daily shadow of foreign vessels. </p><p>Michelle sent out a simple text to friends. </p><div><br/></div><div><em>“Ernie and I are going! </em></div><div><em>WEST PHILIPPINE SEA</em></div><div><em>here we come!</em></div><div><em>We are deeply honored to be joining our Commodores from the Philippine Coast Guard on a meaningful trip to one of the islands in the West Philippine Sea.</em></div><div><em>As we welcome the start of the Christmas season, we would love to bring a little joy to the children, troops &amp; fisherfolk who call the island home. Our hope is to make them feel remembered and cherished, even from afar, through a simple act of gift-giving.</em></div><div><em>The 86 families have shared their needs, and they would truly appreciate donations of groceries(dry goods), toys, and school supplies.”</em></div><div><br/></div><p>Began her message. She had asked them to bring their contributions to their place.</p><p>Within an hour, her phone was flooded with replies: What’s your address? Where can we send help? But what a surprise, they needed not just one, but two trips, to haul the entire care package!<img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1758174060722Metro.Style Michelle and Ernie Lopez West Philippine Sea Airlift.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><div><br/></div><p>By September 14, the Lopez family—Michelle, Ernie, and their children Alessi and Blade—were on their way to Pag-asa Island, alongside the Coast Guard and ABS-CBN News crew, who documented the rare journey. </p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1758174120924Metro.Style Michelle and Ernie Lopez West Philippine Sea Donations Inside the Ship 3.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><div><br/></div><div><strong>Life at the Edge of the Nation</strong></div><p>Pag-asa Island, with its 86 families or a little over 500 residents, is both beautiful and isolated. “They live in a bubble,” Michelle reflects. “There’s no cinema, no grocery, no restaurant.” Supplies must last for months, and medical care is minimal, limited to one doctor and nurse with a stethoscope. As their plane approached, the radio crackled with Chinese interference: <em>This is China airspace. Please turn back</em>. Fighter jets shadowed their path. At sea, Chinese ships loomed within sight. “Every day they wake up and there’s a Chinese vessel there,” Michelle says. “It’s either they’ve given up, or they already took their island,” she says of their fears.<img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1758174224104Metro.Style Michelle and Ernie Lopez West Philippine Sea With Families.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>Despite the tension, the community greeted their visitors with warmth. Blade shared his talent for dancing with the children, while Alessi captured photographs of life on the island. “Alessi also said, this is a bucket list I didn’t even know existed,” Michelle shares. “We came home with our hearts full. The area not only needs medical aid, it also needs to be better connected, whether through WIFI or data.
