Adele Surpasses One Direction And Harry Potter Stars In Richest UK Celebrity List
Who can forget the hit song "Chasing Pavements," the heartbreaking debut of "Hello," and that time we gasped in the cinemas when James Bond played "Skyfall?"
Adele is not only our favorite female pop singer, she is now UK’s richest celebrity, too, with approximately £147.5 million to her name.
It seems like Adele really is “rolling in the deep” cash as she is now more than £50 million ahead of UK’s second richest celebrity, Ed Sheeran, according to magazine Heat World. She has also earned more than Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, who is at rank 3 with £87 million, and Emma Watson, at fifth with £55 million. She is also richer than three of the biggest earners in the boy band One Direction put together!
This is the third time Adele has topped Heat magazine’s 30 wealthiest Brits under 30.
How it all started
Adele’s ranking really is well-deserved, earning most of her money from album sales and concert tours. It all started in 2008 when her first album, 19, was released and immediately topped the album charts. The breakout star’s breakout album was then certified eight times platinum by the British Phonographic Industry with sales of over 2.4 million copies. The two best-performing singles on the album, the phenomenal "Chasing Pavements" and "Make You Feel My Love" won her her first two Grammys: Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Three years after the success of 19 came 21, another chart-topping album from the singer. "Rolling in the Deep," the album’s lead single, broke the charts all over the world, topping in several countries from Australia to Canada to Denmark, and was dubbed by Billboard as the “most widely crossed over song of the past twenty-five years” in the US after appearing on a record 12 different Billboard charts. 21 surpassed everything that 19 accomplished, which was then certified fifteen times platinum and earned Adele several mentions in the Guinness Book of World Records.
After a 3-year-hiatus, Adele came back in 2015 with her latest album, 25. The album sold 17.4 million copies that year, making it the world’s best-selling album for 2015. And 25’s lead single, "Hello," generated 50 million views on YouTube in its first 48 hours, and spent 26 weeks on the Billboard’s Hot 100. By 2016, 25 has earned Adele at least £62 million.
Boosting her wealth
According to NME, it seems like Adele’s newest net worth, which is 50 percent more than her earnings last year, were generated mainly by her last world tour, which reportedly earned a massive £142 million in total. From ticket sales, t-shirts, and other souvenirs, Adele pocketed at least £42 million from the gig.
After a decade in the music industry, Adele really has accomplished a lot. In an interview with i-D, Adele said that she is inspired by the fact that musicians like the Rolling Stones can still play lucratively well into their 70s. She said, “I'd like to be able to stand the test of time and the speed that the world is moving. I'd like to make records forever with the time I've been given for this one.”
