Apl.de.Ap, Sandara Park Perform Collab Song “2 Proud” in Paris

But before their first live onstage performance, Apl.de.Ap first treated the Filipino press to a live rendition of the song in an intimate media gathering in Manila

Apl.de.Ap and Sandara Park surprised fans with the live performance of their collaboration song “2 Proud.”

Sandara flew to Paris as a special guest at the Black Eyed Peas’ April 20th sold-out show at the Paris La Defense Arena in France. The duo performed “2 Proud” for the first time in front of the cheering crowd. The K-Pop idol took to Instagram to thank Apl.de.Ap and the Black Eyed Peas for having her on the show. Likewise, the Fil-Am singer/rapper shared a reels clip of their fun reunion.

The single “2 Proud,” released in March, was produced by long-time Black Eyed Peas music director Keith Harris and was described as an infectious slice of pop infused with gentle hip-hop elements. The song was written during the pandemic and was also recorded separately with Apl.de.Ap currently based in the U.S. and Sandara in South Korea.

“It’s been a long time coming for Sandara and I. Both of us grew up partly in the Philippines so to have been able to connect for the first time was a kind of magic. Sandara was amazing on this track. We had made it during the pandemic but she was a star through everything. The song is a bit of a departure from a lot of what you’d expect from a Black Eyed Peas member, but I listen to a lot of different kinds of music. I hope you enjoy it too,” said Apl.de.Ap of the collaboration.

Sandara was equally thrilled about her work with Apl.de.Ap. “Apl.de.Ap and I have known each other for many years. We both have cherished memories of the Philippine, which bonds us over. As a huge fan of his music, working on this project was filled with excitement and joy. Even though we had to do everything far off separately due to the pandemic, we finally made it and the song came out super great. I hope you also enjoy our first collaboration,” Sandara shared.

The pair first met in 2011 when 2NE1, the South Korean girl group Sandara was a part of, collaborated with Apl.de.Ap’s bandmate Will.i.am on original new music and have kept in contact since.

Prior to the Paris leg of the Black Eyed Peas tour, APL.DE.AP visited Manila to promote the single and even treated the Filipino press to a live performance of the song at a media roundtable.

He shared more stories about the collaboration, saying, “We’ve been running into each other especially here in the Philippines. We see each other in Boracay and in clubs and thought that since we collaborated with CL (2NE1), it would be cool to collaborate with Sandara too. It was through a phone call when I asked her if she wants to do a song. I wanted to collaborate with a K-pop artist and she has history with the Philippines,” Apl.de.Ap further explained the connection.

The singer, who co-wrote “2 Proud” with Vince Nantes, also took the time to describe what the song was about. “Sometimes when you’re going into a relationship, there’s always uncertainty and questions especially if it’s long distance. You kind of want to know where things are going and of course, as anybody, there’s always that tension of wanting to be together. The song is about longing to be with someone,” he said.

The “2 Proud” MV (music video), directed by Ben Mor, was also released which possesses a 50s vibe with Apl.de.Ap lounging poolside soaking up some vitamin D under the soft California sunshine while Sandara performs as seen in a TV set of that era.

Asked by Metro.Style if Sandara also had a say on the music video, Apl.de.Ap readily nodded. “Definitely. She’s very particular on how it sounded and the looks and so there was a lot of going back and forth. Since we’re so far apart, we need to make sure the music video still looks the same, the clothing in a particular time period and locating that, setting the looks and the lighting through Zoom, you know? She had to do a lot on her own,” the Black Eyed Peas member told us.

Given both singers’ history with the Philippines, we also asked if fans will be able to hear Filipino verses in an iteration of the catchy song in the future. Apl.de.Ap paused and contemplated his response, eventually saying, “That would be cool! Great idea.”

2 Proud is now available globally on all digital streaming platforms.
