EXCLUSIVE: Arjo Atayde Is The Star Of ABS-CBN's Newest International Project
He's been chosen as the lead actor in the upcoming series "The Rebirth of the Cattleya Killer"
The world-class talent of Filipino artists will once again shine in the newest international project of ABS-CBN that will star 2020 Asian Academy Creative Awards Best Actor Arjo Atayde.
Director Ruel S. Bayani, head of ABS-CBN International Production and Co-Production division, announced on TV Patrol on September 28 that Arjo will lead the star-studded cast of their upcoming series titled The Rebirth of the Cattleya Killer.
The Rebirth of the Cattleya Killer is based on the 1996 Star Cinema movie Sa Aking Mga Kamay, which is about a serial killer preying on unfaithful wives. The lead role was previously portrayed by Aga Muhlach.
Ruel said Arjo is the best choice to lead the series, which will start filming this year. “He has a proven track-record of giving justice to the diverse roles he has portrayed through the years. His depth and range as an actor will definitely give a fresh take on this 1996 classic,” he said.
Arjo, on the other hand, shared, “First of all, ABS-CBN never fails to surprise me all the time with all these characters. It's one hell of a story. It's one hell of a character, and it's not normally done here. This is one of the most powerful stories that they're gonna remake. I am proud to be part of it. Hopefully, the Cattleya Killer could be one if not the possible door to ABS-CBN stepping into the foreign industry.”
Arjo last brought pride to the country with his performance in the critically-acclaimed iWantTFC original series Bagman, the project that gave him his Asian Academy Creative Awards recognition.
The Rebirth of the Cattleya Killer will be directed by award-winning filmmaker Dan Villegas, and helmed by the same local producers of Almost Paradise, the first U.S. TV series entirely shot in the Philippines co-produced by ABS-CBN and Hollywood’s Electric Entertainment.
The much-awaited series is also one of the chosen participants in the 2021 Full Circle Series Lab, a talent development program led by Matthieu Darras and Izabela Igel with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP). It was selected alongside concepts from other countries in Southeast Asia.
In an exclusive interview with Metro.Style, Arjo Atayde talked about what drew him into the project, his thought process when taking on a certain role, and his "rebirth" as an actor.
What is it about the project that you were initially drawn to?
"First of all, it’s the first-ever international project of ABS-CBN, so who am I not to say yes? It’s a remake of the movie of Tito Aga [Muhlach]. Why wouldn’t I say yes? And I’ve trusted ABS-CBN and the whole team. Some of them are new to me, but I know how they work throughout the years I’ve been in the industry. There’s no reason for me to say no to this project, but all just yes. And I’m just excited because this is, personally, one of the roles that I look forward to doing."
How do you usually prepare for a project? What’s your thought process like when you’re about to shoot a series or a film?
"I think of so many things… Once you start reading a script, it’s better to understand beyond what you’re supposed to understand… I just try to remind myself on a daily basis—it might be a 15-minute once I’m getting closer, 15 minutes, 5 minutes. Just thinking that I am the character in a day helps me pull it off when I’m there already. Pero once I’m there, I have to find the trigger button. Once I see the red button sa camera, that’s my trigger to get into my character."
Is there a particular scene you look forward to shooting in The Rebirth of the Cattleya Killer?
"It’s my first time doing this role. Everything's the first time. Every scene, every bit of it, I want to savor, I want to enjoy… I definitely am looking forward to each and every scene, and savoring each and every journey throughout doing the whole thing."
Would you consider The Rebirth of the Cattleya Killer as some sort of a rebirth for you as an actor as well?
"In a way, I suppose. I take it as an opportunity. Rebirth of an opportunity. I haven’t been working in ABS-CBN also for almost a year… It’s a new challenge. It’s a new step for me. Rebirth in terms of ang daming bago… Like I said, it’s the first-ever international project of ABS-CBN. It’s a new team I’m working with. First time ko lahat sila makaka-trabaho. It’s a beginning for me… I trust everyone. We’re on board, we’re on the same page to make a difference, to put up a good story para maka-align naman ang ating mga stories sa mga foreign countries. Breaking out the formulated films. And hopefully we could get out there. At the end of the day, we all have the same goal, and it’s for the purpose of everyone in the industry. And it’s to get in there, to penetrate, to give them a good story for them to feel, for them to experience the journey of the Cattleya Killer."
