It's Not A Bird, It's Not A Plane—It's Ben Affleck's Massive Phoenix Tattoo That You Can't Unsee
Remember when Ben said his conversation piece of a back tattoo was temporary when it first showed up on our screens two years ago?
Ben Affleck's back tattoo of a phoenix rising from the ashes is huge, and it is real: pic.twitter.com/wN3SgdVR6X— E! News (@enews) March 19, 2018
It's right there, making its home on his broad back, and it was photographed recently on a Hawaii trip Ben is on with cast mates in upcoming film Triple Frontier. It joined in on all the fun in with actors Oscar Isaac and Garrett Hedlund as they wrestled it out in the sea and sand.
The mythical bird body mod done in screaming colors of red, yellow, and blue is as permanent as his Best Director Academy Award, and it's getting a ton of reactions from the people of the internet, as well as two of his famous former flames: ex-fiancé Jennifer Lopez, and ex-wife Jennifer Garner.
When Jennifer Lopez appeared on TV show Watch What Happens Live, she commented, “It’s awful! What are you doing? His tattoos always have too many colors, they shouldn’t be so colorful. They should be cooler."
Jen Garner's words weren't any kinder. In a 2016 interview with Vanity Fair, the Elektra actress let out sharp remarks about her ex's jaw-dropping skin art and said, "You know what we would say in my hometown about that? 'Bless his heart.'"
"A phoenix rising from the ashes... Am I the ashes in this scenario? I take umbrage. I refuse to be the ashes," she continued.
Don't be surprised if Jen's tone sounds rather acerbic; the tattoo surfaced while the couple was heading towards a divorce—a move that Jen reportedly initiated—amidst multiple rumors of Ben's infidelity involving their children's nanny. The couple divorced in June 2015 after a decade of marriage, on the day right after their 10th wedding anniversary.
According to legend, Ben was living in a separate guest house in the couple's compound while details of their divorce were being settled, and a tattoo artist, complete with his gear and ink, needled the design onto the director's back in the private space. The final product is an ultra-textured bird that extends to Ben's shoulders, sides, and to the end of his spine.
He said it took hours to complete. We don't doubt that it did.
But right now, what might be more painful than memories of getting the gigantic tattoo for Ben is how his attempts to woo Jen back into his life are back in the news. It's known that Ben has attempted to win his ex back in the past, but was met with disapproval.
A recent visit to church last Sunday saw two of the Hollywood actors reunite in a rare instance, and it was thought that they might be giving each other another chance. However, rumors were quickly dispelled when the public was reminded of the couple's official statement they released upon finalizing their separation:
“After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time. This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding.”
Part of their "co-parenting" strategy was continuing to bring their three children to church and being involved in their lives as parents—probably also a result of Jen coming from a super tight-knit family. Seeing each other at church was nothing more than proof of this, so "Bennifer 2" fans, we're sorry; it doesn't look like they're getting back together.
Besides, after completing a rehabilitation course for alcohol addiction (and being momentarily embroiled in the Harvey Weinstein scandal) in 2017, Ben's been enjoying a pretty serious relationship with television producer Lindsay Shookus. They've been going out for about a year now, and, girlfriend or no girlfriend, Ben will never be without company—he'll always have a friend sitting on his shoulder, or rather, his back.
