Bring Out The Tissues, Because Gigi Hadid And Zayn Malik Have Officially Broken Up
Do you hear that?
That's the sound of millions of hearts breaking over the news that power couple ZiGi is no longer a thing.
It seems that March is becoming a season of splits with Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber going on yet another break, and this time, supermodel Gigi Hadid and ex-One Direction member Zayn Malik joined the chorus of heartache when they both took to Twitter on March 13 to post statements announcing their official split.
She tweeted first and he followed 11 minutes later with his own words. And when something is announced on social media these days, it's as true as can be. And as if those weren't painful enough, Zayn seems to have unfollowed his now ex-girlfriend on Instagram. Their photos, however, remain up on his account.

Their tweets confirmed a story released by The Sun a few days before their breakup that picked up on an Instagram selfie posted by the English singer. Zayn captioned the photo with the strongly worded, "When Life throws you lemons , catch em so they don’t hit you in the f-----g face," a statement interpreted by the publication to mean that there was trouble in paradise.
While the couple did not provide an explanation for their breakup, it seems as though the pressures of a long distance relationship were what finally tipped the scales. As a successful solo artist, Zayn has been constantly away touring and recording, while Gigi also travels a lot for photoshoots, runway shows, and other modeling engagements all around the world. It was suggested that the couple had simply grown apart over the course of their two-year relationship as their professional lives limited the time they could spend together as a couple.
In the meantime, and while we hope for the best for these two, let's take a look back at how their relationship unfolded in this timeline:
READ: Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber's rollercoaster relationship timeline
Late 2015: Gigi splits with Joe Jonas and Zayn breaks up with British girl band Little Mix's Perrie Edwards. Weeks after they end their relationships, it's said that Zayn introduced himself to Gigi at a Victoria's Secret party and asked her out on a date.
November 2015: The rumored couple is seen leaving Justin Bieber‘s American Music Awards after-party together. By the end of the month, they were seen having a nice dinner date at LA's posh The Nice Guy restaurant where they pretty much confirmed their romance by walking hand in hand.
December 2015: Zayn makes theiir relationship Instagram official by posting the first photo of Gigi on his account. People realize it's gotten real serious when she makes a steamy appearance in his Pillow Talk music video later in the month.
May 2016: The couple appears on their first Vogue cover and looks fantastic, and yes, absolutely in love. The cover coincided with the MET Gala when Gigi and Zayn made their red carpet debut together.
June 2016: Rumors of the couple breaking up surface, but were soon countered when the couple continued to post adorable photos of themselves celebrating special occasions like Christmas and Valentine's Day, and Gigi's birthday months after in April.
August 2017: They appear on Vogue's cover for the second time. At this point in their relationship, Zayn had already met Gigi’s mom, Yolanda, and won her approval, too!
November 2017: Gigi posts a photo announcing their second anniversary.
January 2018: The couple is seen for the last time together in public until breaking up in March.
As it seems, the only glimmer of hope for Zayn's followers and One Direction loyalists alike (who are currently also processing rumors about Liam Payne, another ex-One Directioner, calling it quits with partner Cheryl Cole) is Gigi's take on the possibility of getting back together one day. She did say, after all, that "whatever's meant to be, will always be."
For now, have a box of tissues—and chocolate or a tub of ice cream—ready while we’re all still reeling from this loss of a beautiful relationship.
