Catriona Gray, Vickie Rushton, Michele Gumabao, And Other Bb. Pilipinas 2018 Candidates Answer Common Beauty Pageant Questions

The Binibining Pilipinas 2018 candidates recently showcased their national costumes at the Kia Theater in Cubao, Quezon City with each of the beauties proudly displaying Filipino designers’ creative interpretations of what aptly and majestically represent the Philippines and its heritage.

It was an incredibly busy afternoon yet Metro.Style sensed a strangely serene air about the Bb. Pilipinas 2018 backstage during the recently held National Costume fashion show. It could be because the flurry of activities is muted by the collective poise and sophisticated class of the beauty pageant candidates.

The candidates can already feel the looming pressure of the upcoming main pageant but most of them admirably chose to have fun during the fashion show and simply enjoy the moment, and it showed in their bright countenance that made them even more beautiful.

Among the standouts are the night’s 10 National Costume finalists which included Bb. Pilipinas candidates Stephanie Joy Abellanida (33), Ana Patricia Asturias (4), Maria Andrea Abesamis (11), Rosantonette Mendoza (18), Michele Gumabao (19), Catriona Gray (20), Samantha Avestruz (29), Sarah Margarett Joson (30), Jehza Huelar (31), and Sandra Lemonon (35).

Amid all the hectic activities, Metro.Style caught up with some of the Binibining Pilipinas beauties backstage, and asked them questions typically asked during the dreaded yet much-awaited Q&A portion at pageants:

Bb. 20 Catriona Elise Gray

"In the past, people were born royal. Nowadays, royalty comes from what you do." - Gianni Versace I felt incredibly proud to shed light on the rich, beautiful culture of Mindanao, most specifically Marawi which as of late has been synonymous with war, loss and tradegy. @jearsond took a vision, and brought it to life. His passion for what he does shows in every stone, every thread and every detail. Working with @jearond and his team was a dream and I couldn't think of a better pairing! ??? The look was completed with original, handmade adornments lovingly created by @farah_abu. ??? The weaved Inaul fabric unique to the Maguindanaon and Iranun tribes in Muslim Mindanao used in the gown was integrated into traditional style wedge shoes by @bragaisshoes. To my whole team along with @ton_lao, @harleybarleyyy, the creative vision of Jesson Cappuchino, dance choreography of my angels, @mimsqiu for my pasabog nails and @robinhistoria of David's Salon who made me look like a Muslim Princess last night at the @bbpilipinasofficial National Costume show, I love you all!! ?? To all of my loves who have commented and showed their support either in person or online, thank you! I loved being a princess for a night! Thank you for supporting my journey to be a queen! 14 days to go! ?? Crowd favorite Catriona Gray wowed the audience with a Jearson Demavivas creation punctuated with glittering gold accents and garbed in a headdress reminiscent of a Muslim royalty. She wore original, handmade adornments with weaved Inaul fabric unique to the Maguindanaoan and Iranun tribes in Muslim Mindanao.

In her Instagram account, Catriona explained that with her costume, she “felt incredibly proud to shed light on the rich, beautiful culture of Mindanao, most specifically Marawi which as of late has been synonymous with war, loss and tragedy.”

If you have to live your life again, what part of it would you change?

“I think it would be in high school. I would be more confident 'cause I had a little bit of an ugly duckling phase. I was very tall and very uncoordinated and I just felt very shy. I would’ve been just more ballsy and not afraid to be myself.”

Bb. 1 Vickie Marie Rushton

This classic beauty deserves a timelessly elegant look that someone like Francis Libiran can expertly deliver. Vickie wore a modern take on traditional terno with pure custom art deco cut-outs, paired with sceptered mask depicting one of the most famous festivals in the country—the Masskara festival. She said the costume symbolizes the Filipino resiliency.

Who is the most influential person in your life and why?

“The most influential person in my life is my mother because she is a perfect example of a strong woman. She raised me and my brothers well despite her condition and for me she is an inspiration and I want to be like her.”

Bb. 19 Michele Gumabao

In the sea of colors, Michelle Gumabao stood out in a stunning beaded black terno designed by Nat Manilag. Michele was quoted as saying that she “wanted to be a Philippine Eagle that’s why there are feathers [in the costume] and it’s mostly black.”

If you have to live your life again, what part of it would you change?

“I think I would change the time when I disappointed my parents back in grade school. It was the first time my mom cried when we had a fight. I’ll never forget the look on her face and I would like to go back in time, be a good little girl and know that my mom is looking out for me and she does everything for the best and because she loves me.”

Bb. 28 Angelica Mae Corbe

Adorned in a white terno created by Apple Santillan, Angelica Mae Corbe was simply radiant and gorgeously exuded timeless beauty in this classic ensemble. The gown’s sweetheart neckline and mermaid hemline also highlighted the candidate’s best features.

What is your philosophy in life?

“My philosophy in life is to always be morally upright in every situation you’re in, never compromise yourself and achieving your dreams because you will never be happy in the long run.”

Bb. 32 Eva Patalinjug

In a modern black terno with handwoven floral accents paired with floral headdress and feathered fan inspired by festivals in Cebu, Eva Patalinjug is stunning in this Philipp Tampus creation. No wonder, she’s one of the night’s headturners.

What does being successful mean to you?

“Being successful means to be happy and contented with what you have in life and to realize that the success that you have is not about the destination but the journey itself.”

Bb. 25 Jerell Rodriguez

The night saw many interpretations of terno and Jerell Rodriguez is one of those who shone with a Bea Bianca creation. The modern yet classic-looking terno came with a twist as it was adorned in Filipino tribal prints paired with a headdress reminiscent of renowned Philippine festivals.

What is the best thing your mother taught you?

“The best thing my mother taught me in life is to be patient. With patience, it goes a long way. You get focused on your goals and you work harder for it. As a teacher, I used a lot of patience to be able to impart to my students and to influence other people.”

Bb. 29 Samantha Kaye Avestruz

Resplendent in a Nick Guarino design, Samantha Avestruz looked every inch a royalty in a golden interpretation of Filipino heritage. The gown was creatively made of banig and other indigenous materials as well as shells to create a one-of-a-kind, breathtaking national costume deserving of being one of that night’s finalists.

What is success for you?

“Success for me is achieving your deepest desires and being able to be very happy about what you’ve achieved whether it be having achieved a goal or making your family happy. That for me is success.”

Bb. 35 Sandra Lemonon

Veering away from the regular Filipina feminine look, Sandra Lemonon stood out in a daring Edwin Uy creation. Her unique national costume was inspired by a Filipino warrior tribal queen and the legendary Ibong Adarna. She truly embodied the strength and grace that Filipinas possess.

How is beauty pageant relevant to our society?

“I think beauty pageant is very relevant to our society because with the beauty pageant, we can promote all the causes that we want to promote. I want to promote diversity and it’s a really good platform to share that and other things also like cyberbullying and other things we can share.”

Bb. 7 Sigrid Grace Flores

Jared Servano’s creation highlighted Filipino ingenuity as Sigrid Grace Flores walked down the runway presenting her national costume. Wearing a tribal headdress and a beaded gown primarily decked out in a daring combination of black, red and white colors, Sigrid successfully showcased national heritage without alienating modern-day essence, which the design aimed for.

How is beauty pageant relevant to our society?

“Beauty pageant is relevant because it allows women like me to have a platform for advocacy and it gives us a voice so we can inspire and encourage other people to be of use to the society we’re living in.”
