Emma Stone Is Cruella De Vil In Disney's Brand New Live Action Summer Flick "Cruella"
Make some way for the evilest, vilest, spot-loving, black and white-wearing villain London has ever seen!
Emma Stone is playing Cruella de Vil in Disney's newest live action film, Cruella!
Here's everything we know about the most recent iteration of the story of the most recognizable villainous faces in dog movie history.
As the film's milieu goes, it's 1970-something in London, and the punk rock movement is alive and screeching its heart out.
Men in mohawks and studded belts and women in ripped pantyhose wearing nose rings aplenty roam dodgy corners and sketchy streets, but there's one among these rebels without a cause who's destined to rule them all.
An aspiring fashion designer, she goes by the name of Estrella—or used to, at least. Eccentric and imaginative, Estrella was an explosion of ideas and originality, but having gone overboard with her intentions, she quickly spiraled from ambition to obsession.
Estrella was erased, and someone entirely more bizarre and wicked had arrived to take her place.
The new name she baptized herself with is one that golden age Disney kids know by heart, her wiry half-black and half-white mane and polka dot wardrobe growing more and more menacing over the years...
Six decades after the classic animated film One Hundred and One Dalmatians was released, we're treated to the juicy origin story of the meanest lady the dog world ever did see, and for this generation, Academy Award-winning actress Emma Stone is playing Cruella herself!
Emma Stone's version of the Dalmatian-obsessed woman of (psychotic) style will have big shoes to fill. Before her, there was screen icon Glenn Close who brought Cruella to the big screen in 1996 and 2001's live action remakes of the Disney classic, but fans of the actress (and the villain!) argue that 2021's Cruella will be a fresh take on the character.
For one thing, it will focus on the making of Cruella. Almost the same way Joaquin Phoenix's Joker told the tragic backstory of the comic book universe's most terrifying face, Cruella also shows audiences how a seemingly innocuous young woman jumped from unnoticeable citizen to queen of canine killing sprees.
Another Oscar winner, Emma Thompson, also plays a major role in the film as Baroness, whereas its director, Craig Gillespie, helmed Oscar-winning film I, Tonya. Plus, the wardrobe choices look chic as ever and the script packs a punch in the quotable quotes department.
Cruella is set for a late May summer release.
