This year, I Am Not Big Bird headliner Enrique Gil and Darna star Jane De Leon are partnering on-screen for the first time for a thrilling Metro Manila Film Festival entry.

Strange Frequencies: Haunted Hospital, a horror film slated to premiere at the 50th MMFF this December 2024, is centered on a live stream broadcast taken in a haunted hospital. Considered a first in Philippine cinema, the found-footage format is produced by Enrique Gil himself. The movie was set in Taiwan’s notorious Xinglin Hospital, where scenes were filmed using only GoPros and CCTV cameras.

“It’s a different experience. You’re not just acting, but you’re also taking footage of everything. Parang naging camera guy ka na rin,” Enrique highlighted, taking inspiration from the horror movies that used to scare him as a kid. “Growing up, Halloween was my favorite holiday. My dad would buy stuff from the US and he would decorate the whole house. It was the scariest house in our village.”

Jane de Leon, meanwhile, who recently starred in the horror franchise Shake, Rattle, & Roll Extreme, is just as excited as his fellow actor. According to her, shooting in the infamous hospital evoked authentic reactions from the entire cast and crew, adding a layer of intensity to the offering. “I love scary films…napaka-authentic ng magiging reactions namin. Hindi siya acting-acting,” she said.

Starring Enrique Gil, Jane De Leon, Alexa Miro, MJ Lastimosa, Raf Pineda, Rob Gomez, and content creator Zarckaroo, Strange Frequencies is directed by Kerwin Go.
