Get To Know "Fan Girl" Star Charlie Dizon
This up-and-comer won the Best Actress award at the 2020 Metro Manila Film Festival for the movie "Fan Girl"
Rise Artists Studio and Star Magic talent Charlie Dizon received a great post-Christmas gift that's going to give her 2021 a bright start: a Best Actress award (for the movie Fan Girl) from the 2020 Metro Manila Film Festival.
The Antoinette Jadaone-written and directed Fan Girl paired the up-and-coming actress with actor Paulo Avelino. The coming-of-age film revolves around Jane, portrayed by Charlie, who's obsessed with her idol (played by Paulo) and got to spend a night with him.
Fan Girl initially premiered at the 33rd Tokyo International Film Festival in Japan last October, and was the only Filipino film that made it to the 24th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia. Recently, it was made available to Filipino audiences via Upstream on Christmas Day as one of the official entries to the 2020 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). Both Charlie and Paulo emerged victorious at MMFF's awards night as they both earned the most coveted recognitions at the 2020 MMFF, Best Actress and Best Actor, respectively.
After receiving her award and being showered with positive feedback on her performance, everyone is now curious about who Charlie Dizon is.

1. She debuted as a Rise Artists Studio talent this year.
Rise Artists Studio is the talent management arm of ABS-CBN Films. In February of this year, it launched its first batch of talents, a group made up of 13 up-and-coming actors and actresses which include Charlie Dizon. In an ABS-CBN News article, ABS-CBN Films managing director Olivia Lamasan said that putting up their own artist management studio was done "to keep up with all the requirements of ABS-CBN’s various platforms." She is also under Star Magic.

2. She's among the lead stars in 2020's "Four Sisters Before a Wedding."
In the prequel of the now-iconic 2013 Star Cinema film "Four Sisters and a Wedding," Charlie plays the younger version of Toni Gonzaga's character Theodora Grace "Teddie" Salazar. Her co-stars are Alexa Ilacad, Belle Mariano, and Gillian Vicencio. "Four Sisters Before a Wedding" premiered last December 11.

3.Charlie Dizon is just a screen name.
Her name is actually April Matienzo. In fact, it was the name credited in the films she was a part of: 2017's "Finally Found Someone," "Loving in Tandem," and "Seven Sundays." Her screen name, Charlie Dizon, was actually given to her by ABS-CBN Chief Content Officer and ABS-CBN University President Charo Santos-Concio. In an interview with Manila Standard, she said, "It’s just so funny, a lot of people thought Charlie Dizon was a guy... I like names suitable for both sexes. So, when Ma’am Charo told me that Charlie suits me, I kind of embraced it.”

4. Her Zodiac sign is Aries.
That's why her name is April, it's because she was born on April 12, 1996, making her 24 years old now. She's an Aries woman, and those under this sign are known to be fun-loving, free-spirited, and creative with such a bright personality and infectious energy.

5. She was a K-Pop idol trainee.
Yep, this triple threat of an artist (she can sing, dance, and act!) went to South Korea for it, but unfortunately, it didn't work out in the end. When she returned to Manila, she went back to school and pursued Human Resource Management at College of St. Benilde. Prior to that, she was taking up Nursing at the University of Sto. Tomas. And hey, she's good friends with MOMOLAND's Nancy McDonie whom she met back when she was an idol trainee. And when Nancy went to Manila for some projects, of course, the two made sure to catch up.

6. "Fan Girl" wasn't supposed to give her her first-ever lead role.
The actress who was supposed to play Jane in the movie backed out, so direk Tonet and her team held auditions again, and that's how Charlie landed the role. She may not have been the first choice, but she later proved to be the best choice, as she truly imbibed the character and delivered an award-winning performance. On Instagram Stories, direk Tonet revealed that she didn't give Charlie the full script. "She only receives the script per scene, on the day she will shoot the scene. (But mabilis siya mag-memorize!). This is because I think dahil bagong aktres siya, baka masyado siyang ma-excite at aralin nya nang bongga ang script. Which might lead to her acting being overly studied and calculated. Para mas instinctive siya mag-react." That strategy worked out in the end, because it really brought out the raw emotions the role required.

7. Life under quarantine gave her time to immerse herself in the craft of acting.
Charlie made sure to be productive during quarantine. Aside from doing online trainings with Rise Artists Studio, she also immersed herself in various films and series that not just entertained her but also schooled her on acting. "The thing that I enjoy the most about staying at home is I can watch all the series and movies on my list," she tells us. Charlie added that her most important realization during this time was that "we should value life more, do everything that will make you happy and spend more time with your loved ones 'cause we really don't know what might happen next."

Fan Girl also won Best Director and Best Screenplay (Antoinette Jadaone), Best Picture, Best Cinematography (Neil Daza), Best Sound (Vincent Villa), Best Editing (Benjamin Tolentino), and Third Place - Best Virtual Float.
Fan Girl is available for streaming via Upstream.
