6 Hollywood Celebrities Who Ruined Their Careers With One Wrong Move

Celebrities come and go. Their longevity in the industry mostly depends on their versatility as an actor or artist, and/or the strength of their fanbase. But sometimes, no matter how perfectly talented or beautiful a celebrity is, one wrong move or one controversy can whisk him or her out of the business.

These are celebrities who have emerged on top at one point in their careers, and, with one wrong move, knocked themselves to the bottom of the food chain. Because there are times when the public just won't forget if a certain celebrity waves a knife in front of his neighbor, or if he turns out to be a pedophile.

Winona Ryder

Winona Ryder is one of the most successful and iconic actresses back in the '90s, starring in a number of hit films like Edward Scissorhands, The Age of Innocence, and Little Women. Although Winona has continued to star in films and television series when the 2000s hit, most recently in the Netflix series Stranger Things, no one can ever forget 2001 when she was arrested for shoplifting at Saks Fifth Avenue department store in Beverly Hills.

Winona was accused for stealing $5,500 worth of designer clothes and accessories, and then convicted of grand theft, shoplifting, and vandalism after a rigorous trial. She was sentenced to probation, community services, fines, and restitution to Saks, forcing her to take a hiatus from the industry for the next years.

Katherine Heigl

Fans of hit television series Grey's Anatomy would know Dr. Izzie Stevens, a surgical intern turned resident, who made her final appearance in season 6 when she left Seattle and her husband Alex (Justin Chambers). Known to the show's fans, Dr. Izzie was purposely written out of the show because of the actress who played her—Katherine Heigl.

According to reports, Katherine publicly criticized the show's writers for not giving her character enough material. She even opted out of an Emmy nomination in 2008 because she thought her character did not have enough good material to be nominated. She also begged off to be released from her contract 18 months early, saying she wants to spend more time with her family.

Her criticisms and abrupt exit from the show, naturally, offended writer and producer Shonda Rhimes. This is why when Katherine later asked to return to the show to give closure to her character, Shonda declined. Ever since Grey's Anatomy, Katherine only starred in small film roles. She only came back doing television shows in 2014 in State Affairs.

Do you remember Noah “Puck” Puckerman, that punk guy from televisions series Glee? It was portrayed by American actor and musician Mark Salling, whose biggest break came with that role. Mark starred in four seasons of Glee, and everyone either really liked or hated his character. It was a perfect jump-off point for his career.

But then, in 2013, Mark was accused of assaulting a woman and sexual battery, which set him in a spiral of legal problems. Although he tried to quietly end his dilemma by settling the matter with the defendant outside of court, he made headlines again in 2015 when thousands of photos and videos of inappropriate sexual content of children were suspected to be stored in his computer.

Mark shied away from the public eye since, and was even fired from his role on Adi Shankar's Gods and Secrets. Early this year, in January 30, Mark was found dead, reported to have committed suicide by hanging, near his home in Los Angeles.

Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan started in the industry at the young age of 10. She appeared on Another World and Parent Trap, followed by numerous teen flicks such as Mean Girls, Herbie: Fully Loaded, and Just My Luck.

But even someone as talented and loved as Lindsay could easily lose her street cred with a single wrong move. In 2007, following a number of bad PR from those who have worked with Lindsay, she was arrested on charge of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol. In no time, she was racking up reckless driving accidents, DUIs, drug charges, and even burglary. During the next years, Lindsay would spend her time in and out of rehab and community service.

Today, Lindsay continues to be a star in her own right. But surely, with the depressing number of projects we've seen her star in since the controversies she figured in, it's clear her glory days have never been (and perhaps never will be) rekindled again. She is, however, trying to venture in a different field by launching makeup and fashion lines.

Shia LaBeouf

The Transformers series would probably not be as successful if it wasn't for the talented Shia LaBeouf. He could have continued being the face of Transformers and even the Indiana Jones reboot if it wasn't for the numerous legal troubles he got entangled in.

He became famous for his bar fights, his eccentric art exhibitions, and that one time when he showed up on his neighbor's doorstep, waving a kitchen knife. In 2014, he was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespass at New York's Studio 54 theater, and then again in 2017 for public intoxication and disorderly conduct. Ever since his numerous arrests, Shia has never booked the blockbuster roles and leading man characters he was known for.

Amanda Bynes

Amanda Bynes was once one of the most talented and adorable actresses that have ever graced the film and television industry—but all of that fell apart when she figured in DUI charges and hit-and-run situations. It was in 2012 when she was first charged with DUI. As if not learning from her mistake, she even levelled up her game in 2013 and was charged with marijuana possession after smoking pot casually in the lobby of her Manhattan apartment.

At one point, Amanda announced her retirement from acting, maybe because of her declining fame or to recover from whatever life problems she was dealing with. Although she “unretired” right after announcing her reitrement, Amanda has never really jumped back into the ship. After she was hospitalized in 2014 to be put on a 72-hour psychiatric hold, no one wanted to work with her again, and she will forever be that girl from Easy A who was never seen on TV again.
