JM de Guzman Gets Back On Track—Here's What He's Been Busy With Lately

JM de Guzman has been a household name for years, with the success of his projects, like TV show Angelito: Batang Ama and indie favorite That Thing Called Tadhana, proving his calibre as an actor. Unfortunate circumstances, however, have led him to go on a showbiz hiatus. Having overcome his personal struggles and battles, JM de Guzman picked himself up and stood up again.

Kicking off his much-awaited showbiz comeback was the afternoon TV show Araw Gabi, where he was paired for the first time with Metro.Style cover girl and up-and-coming young star Barbie Imperial. In Araw Gabi, we saw how the talented 30-year-old actor’s passion for his craft never waned. If anything, he exudes this new aura of confidence that emanates from his faith in himself—faith that he can successfully recover from his fall.

“Before, medyo nagiging shaky ako,” the lead star of the recently released romantic film Kung Paano Siya Nawala tells Metro.Style, when asked to describe himself as an actor before a major turning point in his life happened. “Ngayon mas may clarity, direksyon, and goal akong gustong puntahan. Kahit ilang beses akong bumagsak, lagi akong may power. Never na akong nag-concede.”

The right attitude also helped JM in navigating showbiz more smoothly this time, now that he’s been given a second chance to pursue his passion. And as with every project, he’s willing to start and learn from the bottom. “I always think na wala pa akong skillset or laging zero, laging super willing to learn and explore more,” JM shares. “I don’t settle for ‘pwede na ‘yan’ or ‘magaling naman ako.’” That, he adds, keeps the fire in him burning.

To explore more of what he can do is what he aims for now. JM has big dreams, and he looks forward to doing more challenging, psychological roles. Having taken on the producer hat for Kung Paano Siya Nawala, the actor sets his eyes on producing more films. “Actually now, I’m trying na nagpapatulong sa mga kaibigan ko on producing. Gusto kong magsulat in the future, gusto kong mag-direk,” he says.

Apart from being a talented actor and a promising producer, he's also a singer and songwriter. If you liked with his previous songs, you’ll be thrilled to know that JM has started recording again. Currently working on a new album under Star Music, he's set to release a 6- or 8-track compilation that will feature some originals JM penned himself. It will also include a song written by Moira dela Torre. Recently, JM was recognized at the Himig Handog 2018, where the song he interpreted, the ballad "Sa Mga Bituin Na Lang Ibubulong" composed by Kyle Raphael Borbon of Davao, won the Best Song award.

When asked about the general theme of his album, he credits his personal experiences on love. “Kung paano bumagsak sa love or kung paano bumangon sa love—'yung process ng pagbangon ulit,” JM shares, emphasizing that “you have to love yourself more than anything or anyone.”

The actor values this opportunity for a comeback, too, and he’s not here to waste any moment anymore. “Bata pa lang ako, nasa screen na ako, e. Kaya minahal ko rin talaga ‘yung lahat about it,” he says. “The ups and downs, ‘yung failure, 'yung pagri-risk, 'yun 'yung masarap na part.” He beat the odds, and by the looks of it, his new journey is right on track.
