John Lloyd Cruz Won Best Actor Award in Switzerland

The highly-acclaimed actor just added another item to his long list of acting awards

Award-winning actor John Lloyd Cruz took home the Boccalino d’Oro prize or Golden Jug Award for Best Actor at the 76th Locarno International Film Festival. He was recognized for his role in Lav Diaz’s three-hour opus “Essential Truths of the Lake.” John Lloyd attended the prestigious film festival in Switzerland with Direk Lav, the film’s producer Bianca Balbuena, and his co-actors Shaina Magdayao and Hazel Orencio

The movie follows the story of an honorable police officer and investigator, Lt. Hermes Papauran, who is probing a 15-year-old cold case surrounding a mysterious lake. The murder involves a model named Esmeralda Stuart (Magdayao).

In a statement made by Film Development Council of the Philippines Chairman and CEO Tirso Cruz III, he congratulated John Lloyd for his valuable win in the international awards. “It is with great joy and pride that I congratulate one of the most talented artists of our country, Mr. John Lloyd Cruz, for having won the Boccalino d’Oro prize for Best Actor at the 76th LFF in Switzerland.”

On the official website of Locarno film fest, “Essential Truths of the Lake” is summarized as below: “When asked what drives a man to search for the truth, Lieutenant Papauran says dejectedly that maybe he just wants to keep inflicting pain on himself. Faced with President Duterte’s bloody murders and brazen lies, he continues his struggle to solve a fifteen-year-old case around an ash-laden landscape and an impenetrable lake. It has become a cross he can barely carry but keeps dragging it anyway.”

Lav Diaz’s masterpiece is the Philippines’ official entry to the said festival and the only Southeast Asian film that made it to Locarno’s main competition. The feat was something that John Lloyd Cruz is very proud of, too, as he dedicates the prize to his fellow countrymen. “Para sa Pilipinas; para sa Pilipino; para sa mga pinatay at mga naiwan nila,” he said in his acceptance speech.
