Julia said this project, previously titled Forgetting Canseco, was pitched to her two years ago. “It was a really good pitch. I remember it was Direk Denise [O’hara] who pitched it to me because she wrote and then directed the movie. So, alam mo ’yung pinitch niya sa’kin na parang kinuwentuhan niya lang ako. And I was like, ‘Okay, Direk, I’m excited to read the script and then we can talk about it,’” Julia shares. “After that, I kid you not, that Zoom meeting had lasted 10 minutes. And then they sent over the script right away. And, you know, when I finished reading the script, I said, I just knew I had to do this project. I mean, I think number one was, I was a choir member, I was singing. It was a very odd love story, so it means I get to learn something new. I get to tell a different kind of love story. I already had imagined the different kinds of new things, new opportunities that would come with the film. And so, it was a quick yes.”

A good script, Julia shares, always puts her in a good mood. It’s one of the factors she considers today when she’s choosing a project. She adds, “And then, of course, the director that we’re working with. And then of course, the people that I’m working with for the project, especially when I’m working with them for the first time. Or, if working again with somebody that I had such joy working with. It’s a lot of factors that make you look forward to a film. But there’s nothing like a great material and a great script.” Ikaw Pa Rin Ang Pipiliin Ko is a little bit of everything, ticking the boxes of her considerations before taking on a project.

This Viva Films movie marks the first time she worked with director Denise O’Hara and actor Aga Muhlach. And with refreshing honesty, as Julia admits she’s not a singer, it was a new challenge for her, too, to portray the role of a choir member. To better portray her character, Julia had a crash course in singing and worked closely with a vocal coach, who is an alumna of the the Philippine Madrigal singers.

If her memory serves her right, it was also the first time she filmed a movie in Baguio City, Philippines. Although they only shot the movie there for 11 days, Julia was able to see and experience this city anew. The so-called “City of Pines,” where a bustling city meets a serene natural landscape, is known for having a nippy weather.

In our exclusive Metro Talks interview with Julia, she said, “I was such in awe of Baguio because it was the first time that… I don’t know if it’s my first time shooting a film in Baguio. Most likely. Correct me if I’m wrong. But because I was biking so much in the movie that it gave me the opportunity to really feel the breeze and see how beautiful Baguio was. And then I was biking in spaces that I don’t think I had passed even using a car. So, ang ganda lang ng experience na nagba-bike ka paakyat, pababa tapos nakikita mo ’pag nagiging foggy na, nakikita mo ’yung buong city, nakikita mo ’yung beautiful trees. So, I think, that was also such a nice experience for me to do. I was biking around Baguio.”

Julia also shared her top go-to places in Baguio: Hatch Coffee, Tsokolateria Artisanal Café, and her and her family’s favorite, Hill Station. Of the last one, she says, “I remember we had really good Croque Madame there… We always go there as a family. You know, I just eat in Baguio when I’m there, actually.”

Speaking of food trips, if there’s a place she wants to go back to for food, it’d be Paris, France. Julia shares, “I’ve been to Paris twice last year, but I feel like there’s still so much for me to explore in Paris. It was always a quick stop in Paris so parang it was always a quick exploration and adventure. But I do want to go back and kind of live in一not live一I mean, live like a local. ’Yung less tourist-y stuff. Like, more on get to know the cafés, the restaurants…”

She adds, laughing, “Kakain lang din pala ako! Bottomline is, I think I’m going to go back to eat again in Paris! ’Yun lang pala ’yun. Kung maka-adventure pa ako! To eat!” Every time she goes home from Paris, she said that her social media feed would be filled with posts on must-try places in Paris, which she didn’t get to check out. So, next time, she said, “It has to be planned out.”
