These K-Drama Stars Who Played Onscreen Couples Have The Same Surnames

These days, blending names has become the common practice when shipping a tandem一whether an on-screen pairing or a real-life couple.
In the past year, we were introduced to these onscreen, K-drama couples who were shipped as LeeEul (Lee Min-ho’s Lee Gon and Kim Go-eun’s Jung Tae-eul in The King: Eternal Monarch), MoonMoon (Kim Soo-hyun’s Moon Gang-tae and Seo Ye-ji’s Ko Moon-young in It’s Okay to Not Be Okay), and DoDal (Nam Joo-hyuk’s Nam Do-san and Bae Suzy’s Seo Dal-mi in Start-Up).
But there are times when fans love these K-drama stars’ onscreen chemistry so much they ship them even off-cam, in real life.

Who doesn’t know the SongSong couple? Descendants of the Sun leads Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo became a real-life couple after working with each other in the said series. They got married in 2017, but they got divorced in 2019; still, there’s no denying that their characters Yoo Si-jin and Kang Mo-yeon make one of the most iconic and memorable K-drama couples.
The term BinJin also became popular after the Crash Landing on You phenomenon, and even more so when the series’ stars, Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin, confirmed they’re dating.
Today, many fans are also shipping the likes of ParkPark (Park Seo-joon and Park Min-young) and MinGo (Lee Min-ho and Kim Go-eun), and these pairings are likely to be on the top of the list of onscreen couples they’d want to see reunite in a project.

Park Seo-joon and Park Min-young
In their 2018 rom-com "What's Wrong With Secretary Kim," Park Seo-joon’s Lee Young-joon is the vice chairman of a big company, while Park Min-young’s Kim Mi-so is his secretary. Working together has brought them closer, and a cute office romance ensues. Little did they know that their lives are more connected than they could’ve ever imagined.

Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo
This 2016 K-drama "Descendants of the Sun" cast Song Joong-ki as Yoo Si-jin (aka "Big Boss"), the captain and leader of an elite special forces team who falls in love with the beautiful cardiothoracic surgeon Kang Mo-yeon (portrayed by Song Hye-kyo). Because of his job, however, they have to part ways, as he's sent on a peacekeeping mission in a war-torn country called Uruk. Months later, they reunite in Uruk, where she's sent to be one of the medical volunteers. There, they rekindle their relationship amidst a war, an earthquake, and an epidemic.

Park Bo-young and Park Hyung-sik
This 2017 rom-com "Strong Woman Do Bong-Soon" has hints of fantasy, thriller, and action. It features Park Bo-young as Do Bong-soon, a fragile-looking girl with a superhuman strength. Because of this extraordinary ability, she is hired by gaming company CEO Ahm Min-hyuk (Park Hyung-sik) to be his bodyguard. Given the time they've spent together at work and in a dangerous pursuit of a kidnapper, the two become close and fall in love with each other.

Lee Joon-gi and Lee Ji-eun (IU)
Different genres meet in 2016 K-drama “Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo”一historical, melodrama, romance, time travel, and fantasy. Lee Ji-eun’s (IU) Go Ha-jin, a woman from the 21st century, gets transported back in time to the Goryeo period, where she meets royal princes from the Wang family and finds herself in the middle of a political conflict. She’s initially attracted to 8th Prince Wang Wook (Kang Ha-neul), but she eventually falls for 4th Prince Wang So (Lee Joon-gi), who’s been hiding behind a mask and misunderstood by many because of his cold façade.

Park Bo-gum and Park So-dam
2020 series "Record of Youth" presented a realistic portrayal of the hardships and challenges that the young ones face as they're thrown out into the real world, to pursue their dreams. It starred Park Bo-gum as Sa Hye-jun, a struggling model and an aspiring actor and Park So-dam as An Jeong-ha, an up-and-coming makeup artist and vlogger. Jeong-ha is a fan of Hye-jun, and as they both strive to achieve their dreams and get close in the process, they develop a romantic relationship.

Jang Na-ra and Jang Hyuk
(Note: Jang Hyuk's real name is Jung Yong-joon) | The 2002 rom-com series “Successful Story of a Bright Girl” marked the first time Jang Hyuk and Jang Na-ra worked with each other. She played the role of a simple countryside girl while he breathed life into the character of an arrogant president of a makeup company. In their reunion project via the 2014 series "Fated to Love You," Jang Hyuk played another rich guy character, who’s the successor of a huge family-run company, while Jang Na-ra took on the role of a naive office employee at a law firm.

Lee Jong-suk and Lee Na-young
Friends-turned-lovers is the gist of 2019 K-drama "Romance is a Bonus Book." An accident in the past brought Lee Jong-suk’s Cha Eun-ho and Lee Na-young’s Kang Dan-i closer. Dan-i later marries another man but they get divorced, and she ends up struggling as a single mom. Circumstances bring friends Eun-ho and Dan-i together under one roof and in one workplace; he’s a successful author and a chief editor at a book publishing company, while she used to be an advertising copywriter who gets employed as a temporary task support team member in the same company Eun-ho works for.

Lee Dong-wook and Lee Da-hae
(Note: Lee Da-hae's real name is Byun Da-hye) | They have worked with each other twice. The 2005 rom-com series “My Girl” featured Lee Dong-wook as the only heir of a top hotel, while Lee Da-hae is a tour guide who is running mini tours in Jeju Island. In their reunion project, the 2014 melodrama “Hotel King,” Lee Dong-wook’s character is associated with a hotel again, this time as the general manager of Hotel Ciel; Lee Da-hae’s character is an heiress, who’s the only daughter of the chairman of the said hotel.

Lee Bo-young and Lee Sang-yoon
Lee Sang-yoon and Lee Bo-young’s first small screen pairing was via the 2012 romance family drama “Seoyoung, My Daughter” where their characters meet by chance until he falls in love with her and pursues her. This tandem was seen again through the 2017 legal drama “Whisper.” Lee Bo-young played the character of a section chief of a criminal division who later disguises herself and joins a law firm as an undercover. Lee Sang-yoon’s character, on the other hand, is a righteous judge who’s left with no choice but to work with the same law firm.

BONUS! Song Seung-heon and Song Hye-kyo
There was another SongSong couple in K-dramaland, and they’re an OG onscreen pairing: Song Seung-heon and Song Hye-kyo, who starred in the classic 2000 Korean series “Autumn in My Heart.” Yoon Joon-suh (Song Seung-heon) and Yoon Eun-suh (Song Hye-kyo) grow up as siblings until one day, they discover they are not related when Eun-suh needs blood transfusion after an accident. When Joon-suh’s real sister is found, he and Eun-suh get separated as his family moves to the United States. A decade later, he comes back to Korea and they reunite. They overcome odds as they realize their romantic feelings for each other.
