Becoming Miss World Philippines 2018 was undoubtedly an extra sweet victory for the 26-year-old whose first foray into pageantry ended in defeat; she was named Miss Intercontinental Philippines 2017 last year, but was denied the crown in a hairline loss to Mexico's Veronica Salas Vallejo. The pageant concluded with Katarina as first runner-up.

The pain from the loss stayed with Katarina for some time, but being the true queen that she is, she rose up from the ashes and re-focused her energies on a brighter path: giving pageantry a second shot as a more focused and driven woman.

I can’t believe the Beach Beauty Competition was nearly two weeks ago! Time really goes by fast when you’re having fun. ?? Every time I see a video of my performances I get this giddy feeling because I know I’ve improved so much since last year. I know it’s not perfect yet (& probably won’t ever be) but I can see how much more fun I’m having each time I walk the stage. ?? My mantra word for #MWP2018 is what I learned in Egypt- MERAKI, to do all things with soul, creativity & passion; to put all of yourself into something. I’ve put all of my heart & soul into #MWP2018 so far & for the first time in a long time, I am happy because of something that I have done for me. ♥?

"I feel like I (finally) have the hang of it all—things like how to communicate with the production, the client, my co-talents. And I now understand the importance in what I wear and how I carry myself. This time last year, I was still trying to figure out how to nail that consistent momentum and how to stay focused on what really mattered to me," Katarina shared with Metro.Style in an exclusive pre-Miss World Philippines pageant interview.

The Filipino-American beauty stayed true to her words, winning not only the night's top award, but a slew of special awards including Beach Beauty Challenge winner, Best in Long Gown, Miss Resorts World Manila, Miss Cosmo Skin, and Miss Blue Water Day Spa. Katarina beat 39 other candidates to claim her title.

Katarina's composure and quick-witted answer during the Q&A round has also been earning her praise.

When asked how she could change the opinions of those who believe that pageants are used an instrument of women's exploitation, she answered, "One should live by example and not by opinion, and I would like to admit I was one of those before until I learned more about what beauty pageants are about," she started.

"One thing I can tell you is that you may think this is very competitive, but in fact, you'll understand beauty pageants when you know that it is actually not competitive towards the other women, it's competitve towards yourself, and it's all about women empowerment, and you can feel that in this group of girls, each girl knows that we are all individually beautiful," Katarina ended.

The next step for Katarina is to bag the ultimate Miss World 2018 title in a pageant scheduled to take place in December in Sanya, China.

As she embarks on the final stages of her Miss World Philippines journey, Katarina took the time to express her gratefulness and readiness to represent the Philippines on the world stage. Her latest Instagram post sums up all that she feels about the life-changing opportunity:

♥??????????? My heart cannot be fuller than tonight, to walk the stage again for all of our nation, competing to wear the Philippine sash over my heart one more time - and this time for the WORLD. I know this country like the back of my hand. The history, the people, and the greatness. The last few months I have given all of myself and all of my time for this night. I have nothing in my heart but love for you, Philippines. Tonight is dedicated for you and for God. Thank you all for making me the woman I am today, thank you for believing in me and giving me this one more chance. Thank you for all your messages and prayers. If the stars will have it, it would be my grandest honor to represent the Philippines this year for Miss World. Philippines, come alive tonight with me at 10:00PM on Channel GMA7. I love you always. ? Photography & Styling | @misterpatrickjames Makeup | @delosreyesjason Hair | @markanthonyrosales Style Associate | @eclipsegem Shoot Coordinator | @iamkrishnab

Katarina may be the next Filipina to bring home a Miss World crown after Megan Young's win in 2013. On the other hand, Karen Gallman is this year's Philippine bet at the Miss Intercontinental pageant, and could become the first-ever Philippine titleholder, should she win.
