“We thought we already said our goodbyes, but here we are saying our hellos,” Kapamilya actress Kathryn Bernardo declared. With that seemingly simple statement, fans and the entertainment industry erupted in cheers.

After making unprecedented box office history in Philippine cinema as the highest grossing film of all time until January 2024, Kathryn and Alden Richards are set to reunite with Hello, Love, Again—the sequel to the megahit Hello, Love, Goodbye.

For this project, ABS-CBN’s Star Cinema and GMA Pictures are teaming up for the very first time to produce the film. Kathryn and Alden will reprise their memorable characters Joy and Ethan while Cathy Garcia-Sampana, who helmed the first film, returns to direct the sequel.

Teasers abound and have been floating on social media with fans eagerly anticipating the sequel and finally, an official movie announcement event was recently made with key executives from ABS-CBN and GMA in attendance. The special red carpet event was graced by the lead stars Kathryn, Alden, Direk Cathy, writers Carmi Raymundo and Crystal San Miguel, and the big bosses (ABS-CBN president and CEO Carlo Katigbak, ABS-CBN Chief Operating Officer Cory Vidanes, ABS-CBN Film Productions head Kriz Gazmen, and GMA Films president and CEO Atty. Annette Gozon-Valdes).

The unveiling of the plans for Hello, Love, Again is a testament to Star Cinema’s decades of telling heartwarming stories of Filipinos and shedding light on the realities of Filipinos living and working abroad through its cinematic endeavors such as Anak, Barcelona: A Love Untold, Caregiver, Dubai, In the Name of Love, and Milan.

Metro.Style attended the historic movie announcement, and we’re breaking down important things to note about this massive project:

Hello, Love, Again is the chosen first collaboration project of Star Cinema and GMA Pictures.

The movie being a collab between ABS-CBN and GMA became common knowledge but ABS-CBN Film Productions’ Gazmen revealed that the two companies have been looking to partner for a long time saying, “Actually, Annette and I have been talking about collaborating for more than two years now and finally, timing is everything. This is it. I know that this is only the beginning of a fruitful partnership and together, we’re going to do and we’re going to make history again.” Atty. Gozon-Valdes echoed Gazmen’s emotions and shared that “I think this is the best movie that we can begin with so I’m thankful to Star Cinema and to ABS-CBN, Direk Cathy, Kathryn and Alden for this opportunity you gave to GMA Pictures. We’re looking forward for more collaborations to come.”

A pre-production immersion has been done in Canada already.

Prior to the official announcement, the project’s team has actually flown to Canada already to do their homework and build a solid story for the sequel from there. According to Direk Cathy, flying to Canada was more than just an ocular visit, it was done more for immersion and interviews. “May iba pala talagang kwento kapag lumipat ka na ng ibang bansa. Ibang-iba. The journey and the learnings na nakuha namin from OFWs sa Hong Kong, ibang-iba sa kuwento ng mga taga-Canada which excites me kasi at least alam ko, may bago kaming ikukuwento,” the director shared.

The pandemic will be incorporated in the story.

Given the timeline and the real events that occurred globally, the Star Cinema creative team will definitely include how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the story. “Hindi p'wedeng hindi [incorporated]. Noong lumipad si Joy papuntang Canada, nagkaroon ng pandemic, nag-shutdown ang mundo. Ang Hello, Love, Goodye naman talaga, iyong dalawang characters kasama iyong mundo sa kwento nila mismo,” Carmi said. Co-writer Crystal also voiced out, “Dahil nabago ang mundo, for sure nabago rin ang characters at mga pinagdaanan nila at ang pinakamalaking tanong is kung nagbago ba iyong love that they have for each other?”

The sequel came as a surprise to Kathryn.

“I was surprised too!” Kathryn exclaimed. The actress swore she did not expect that there will be a sequel and that it will be this year. She admitted she was initially hesitant about a sequel and considered a new story for her and Alden but putting herself in the shoes of the viewers, she realized the need for a sequel. “Ang dami kong gustong malaman. Kumusta si Joy? Is Ethan okay? Nag-survive ba iyong LDR nila? Kumusta iyong buhay niya sa Canada? Nagawa ba niya iyong dreams niya? So for me, Hello, Love, Again will provide the answers to my questions and to all our questions hopefully and this time, ibang setting sa Canada,” Kathryn disclosed.

Alden has been wishing to do a sequel for this movie.

Admittedly, Alden shared he has been looking forward to do the project ever since. “Ako, hinintay ko rin siya. After seeing the film over and over again, iyong pangarap na iyon nasa puso ko lang in the past five years. So finally, dreams do come true talaga,” the actor said. Direk Cathy attested to Alden’s wishes as he had been texting the director also about it. “The long wait is over. Kasama ako doon. Marami kaming naghintay. I couldn’t be happier today because this gave me another motivation—iyong gigising ka sa umaga na meron kang nilu-look forward to. I am so excited and happy that this is happening,” Alden concluded.

Save the date for Kathryn and Alden. Hello, Love, Again is set to screen exclusively at the cinemas on November 13, 2024.
