Lea Salonga and Dolly de Leon Share Pieces of Advice for Aspiring Actors
Learn from the best and appreciate world-class acting, as these two acclaimed Filipino stage stars take on Franz Xaver Kroetz's "Request sa Radyo"
Tony and Olivier winner Lea Salonga and Golden Globe and BAFTA nominee Dolly de Leon are among today’s most respected, acclaimed, and world-renowned Filipino stage stars. Their contributions to the entertainment industry in the Philippines and globally continue to set the standard for caliber acting that can only come from relentless passion and a wealth of experience.
Salonga and de Leon, who are often abroad for work commitments, now find time to come home and work on a groundbreaking play that tackles a mundane yet extremely relevant topic of isolation and the human condition.
In Franz Xaver Kroetz’s Request sa Radyo (Wunschkonzert / Request Program), Salonga and de Leon perform the solo piece, alternately playing the leading role of a woman navigating a quiet, solitary life. Amid the deafening silence, her favorite radio program reveals her profound loneliness and yearning for connection.
Joining the two actresses in the play’s roster of multi-awarded artists and creatives are Clint Ramos (a 6-time TONY Award nominee and the recipient of a TONY Award for his designs for Eclipsed) and Bobby Garcia (whose career is marked by numerous acclaimed productions, both in the Philippines and internationally).
Of this project and the collaboration, creative director and producer Clint Ramos said, “I have always been so moved by this play as a piece of modern theatre. Its intimate package belies the vastness of exploration of the human condition. When we got the blessing to bring it to Manila at the Samsung Theatre and have it speak to a specific Filipino condition, we could only think of two of the Philippines’ premier actors, Lea Salonga and Dolly de Leon, to star in it. Together with director and pal, Bobby Garcia, I cannot think of a better piece for all of us to collaborate on and be of artistic service to the motherland and our people.”
During a Masterclass session hosted by Ayala Land, Ramos also said, “I think Request sa Radyo offers another side of theater… What excites me most is seeing these two like you’ve never seen them before.”
The Masterclass session was not only an opportunity to talk about Request sa Radyo but also a rare chance for theater students to learn from two of the best Filipino actresses, Salonga and de Leon. Here are the pieces of advice they shared:
