EXCLUSIVE: "The Bond You Can Have With A Father Is Unlike Any Other"—Leila Alcasid Writes A Letter To Her Dad, Ogie Alcasid
Fathers are those who care for you, have patience with you, support you. My own dad does it with flying colors. Despite not growing up together, the relationship I have with my dad is invaluable in every sense of the word. We parted when I was a little girl, and picked up right where we left off when I grew up. Any memories we would’ve missed out on making, we’re making now, and it’s wonderful.
Everything I’ve done and still want to do, I couldn’t do without him. When I doubt myself, he’s the first to remind me of my strengths. I wish everyone could see his heart the way I do.
There are so many things I want to say thank you for but if I tried to say them all, we’d be here for a while, so I’ll just say a few. Thank you for making me laugh when all I want to do is cry. Thank you for making me work when all I want to do is laze around. Thank you for making me brave when all I want to do is be shy. Thank you for making me love when all I want to do is be angry.
"Thank you for making me laugh when all I want to do is cry"
I’m so glad that now, I get to learn, grow, and mature alongside you. In everything I do, I look for ways to make you proud. In all my obsessing over proving my abilities to you, I’ve realized one thing: I don’t need to. In everything you do—the way you talk to me, the way you look out for me—you’re already proud. You already know my abilities. So thank you for having faith in me.
I know sometimes you’re unsure of whether or not you’re doing the dad job right and I promise, you are. As human beings, we’re always learning how to be better versions of ourselves, and you’re doing a splendid job.
"In all my obsessing over proving my abilities to you, I’ve realized one thing: I don’t need to... so thank you for having faith in me"
I hope that one day, when I’m all grown up with kids of my own, I can apply everything you’ve taught me—the love, patience, humor. If I can give my children the same kind of treatment you’ve given me, I think I’ll be content.
To all my fellow young ones, say thank you to your own dads this Father’s Day. If there’s one thing I’ve learned the past year and a half, living with my dad again, it’s that there’s not a lot of time to waste. I’m already turning 21 and we’re the closest we’ve ever been. All I wish for is more time, so make everything count! The bond you can have with a father is unlike any other.

To all the other dads out there, thanks for always being there for us! We may not always show it, but we appreciate everything you do. Don’t worry if you think you’re doing the wrong thing—9 times out of 10 we also are. Take this Father’s Day to reflect and be proud of all the times you’ve been patient, all the times you’ve given your time, all the times you’ve made sacrifices. None of it goes unnoticed.
One last note for my own dad: I love you and I’m happy we’re spending the day together.
Happy Father’s Day!
