Liza Soberano is making waves in Hollywood with the film Lisa Frankenstein! The Filipino-American actress graced the Los Angeles premiere of the funny-gory horror romance film alongside stars Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse.

Of this amazing experience, Liza shares, “What a special night the Lisa Frankenstein premiere was! I’m so incredibly honored to be around amazing talent and even better human beings! I’m so proud of this wonderfully bonkers film we made that was born out of love for horror/comedy and a passion for story telling.”

Lisa Frankenstein, directed by Zelda Williams (daughter of the late Robin Williams and herself part-Filipina), marks Liza Soberano's Hollywood debut. In this “coming-of-rage” film, which also has Oscar®-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody at the helm, features Liza as Taffy, the plucky cheerleader stepsister of Lisa (played by Kathryn Newton).

Lisa is an awkward 17-year-old trying to adjust to a new school and a new life after her mother’s death and her father’s hasty remarriage. This lead female character finds solace in the abandoned cemetery near her house, where she tends to the grave of a young man who died in 1837–and whose corpse she unwittingly reanimates (Cole Sprouse). Feeling obligated to help the poor soul regain his humanity, Lisa embarks on a quest to breathe new life into her long-dead new companion. All she needs to succeed are some freshly harvested body parts and Taffy’s broken tanning bed. The film also features notable actors like Joe Chrest (Stranger Things), Henry Eikenberry (The Crowded Room), and Carla Gugino (San Andreas).

Cody (who is also known for penning acclaimed film Young Adult, starring Charlize Theron, and the Megan Fox-led cult-classic Jennifer’s Body) shared that Taffy is her favorite character: “Taffy is my favorite character. She’s a beacon of positivity, and even when she’s unwittingly condescending or tone deaf, her intentions are always kind. She’s more protective of Lisa than anyone else in the film, other than the Creature. Lisa resents Taffy because she’s effortlessly beautiful and popular, but Lisa eventually comes to realize that her ire is misdirected. I felt that having Taffy be a standard ‘mean popular girl’ would be uninteresting. Most of the queen bees I’ve known were more complex than that.”

At the LA premiere of Lisa Frankenstein, Liza graced the red carpet, wearing an Oliver Theyskens strapless dress, which she later layered with a Giuseppe Di Morabito coat. She was glammed up by her go-to team: makeup artist Mickey See and hairstylist Renz Pangilinan. She also worked with wardrobe stylist Maeve Reilly, who has styled Hollywood A-listers like Megan Fox, Jennifer Hudson, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Eva Longoria.

While Liza was in the thick of her movie promos in the US, a special screening of Lisa Frankenstein, with the support of digital bank Maya and SM Cinemas, was held on her behalf. Present during the event were Enrique Gil (who is also starring in the upcoming film I Am Not Big Bird), James Reid, and Issa Pressman.

We were among the first ones to watch Lisa Frankenstein during this advanced screening, and all we can say is that Liza totally nailed her performance! She was such a breath of fresh air in the film, and her comedic timing is on-point. She incredibly disappeared into her role, making a statement with her portrayal of Taffy with every scene she is in.

“I had an instant connection with her,” says Liza (who is popular for films My Ex and Whys and Alone/Together and for her voice acting stint in Trese) of Taffy, her first Hollywood film role. “She’s such a fun character to play.”

Liza is very excited and grateful for the opportunity. “It’s set in the 80s, so the whole look—the hair, makeup—is totally 80s, which is new for me,” she says. “It’s the kind of movie I’ve always wanted to do. It has horror, comedy, and romance in one. I was looking for a role that would really push me. Sure, it’s a huge risk for my career, but that’s what’s exciting about it. I know I’ve learned a lot no matter how it turns out. That’s what counts.”
