No Longer Darna—Liza Soberano Withdraws From Playing The Iconic Superhero

News of Liza's departure from Star Cinema's untitled Darna movie  was made official by a statement released by ABS-CBN on Thursday, April 4, that cited medical reasons for her exit.

The actress, who played Ganda in the concluded fantasy TV series Bagani, broke her right index finger in April last year while filming a particularly intense action scene and has since undergone two surgeries and continued therapy for her injury. According to Liza, she crushed multiple parts of her finger bone, even injuring its joint, resulting in partial loss of her finger's mobility.

Her new role as Darna would similarly require her to perform physically demanding stunts, move with props, and follow rigorous fitness regimens—all of which would hamper her healing and open herself up to the potential of re-injuring her finger.

Given that Liza is also due for a third surgery in May (one meant to remove the metal rods installed to help her bone heal the right way), the 21-year-old decided that the physical demands of the movie were simply too risky of a gamble for her condition.

To confirm the news herself, Liza appeared on an interview to personally respond to questions surrounding the news.

Touching the issue of disappointing her fans who have been waiting for the movie's release since its production began in 2017, Liza couldn't help but shed tears, her emotions overwhelming her that she requested to pause the interview.

Liza's departure from Darna marks the film's third major setback since Angel Locsin was slated to play its titular character more than 10 years ago. Angel, like Liza, withdrew from the movie due to a major spinal injury that she continue to seek treatment for today.

On the other hand, Darna's original director, Erik Matti, left the movie late last year due to creative differences with Star Cinema, and was replaced by Heneral Luna's Jerrold Tarog.

The search for the next actress to play Darna has already begun with Pia Wurtzbach, Maja Salvador, and Nadine Lustre as three of the top bets.
