Margot Robbie Will Bring Barbie To Life On The Big Screen
For 60 years, Toymaker Mattel’s Barbie has captivated the imagination of young girls. The iconic doll has depicted more than 200 careers, including being a robotics engineer, an astronaut, and a teacher.
On January 8, Mattel and Warner Brothers announced their partnership in a live-action Barbie movie. As of this writing, there is no plot, title or release date for the film yet.
Portraying Barbie will be Oscar nominated actress, Margot Robbie, 28, who is known for her roles in Suicide Squad, I,Tonya, and The Wolf of Wall Street. She will also be a co-producer of the Barbie movie under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, alongside Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara from LuckyChap Entertainment.
In a statement released by Mattel, Margot was quoted as saying, “Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery. Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president,” the actress said.
Last March 2018, actress Amy Schumer announced that she was dropping out as the lead of the Barbie film. “Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts,” Amy said. "The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”
