Metro In Love: Miko Raval And Kaira Dimatulac Talk About Their Relationship Highlights And The Details Of Their Wedding

In this exclusive, the newlywed couple looks back on the start of their relationship and looks forward to the next chapter of their lives as Mr. and Mrs.

“We met back in college. She was a freshman, I was in third year. We met through a common friend. We’re both athletes. We had to do a shoot for a magazine during that time and we were the athletes who were featured for that article. So ’yun, nagkasabay kami,” actor Miko Raval recalls the story of how he met his fiancé and now-wife, Kaira Dimatulac. However, it wasn’t until three years after that meet-cute when love found them; they both agree it was worth the wait.

Today, February 1, this couple of almost nine years starts their journey to forever.

“Who would’ve thought?” are the words Miko kept on repeating in the introduction of his proposal video. Like the little surprises in life, falling in love with each other is one of the unexpected twists in their lives.

And so is getting married and the events leading up to their big day. A few months after his romantic proposal on top of Wondaeri Birch Forest in South Korea, the COVID-19 pandemic suddenly entered the picture. “Our pre-pandemic [wedding] plans changed,” Kaira tells Metro.Style. With quarantine restrictions limiting gatherings, the two had to adjust and reconsider their priorities. Changes aren’t always bad, after all.

How romance bloomed

There was a spark, Miko recalls, as he reveals that he felt “like at first sight” with Kaira. “I just found her beautiful,” he says. But their initial meetings just weren’t the right time yet for them to be romantically involved with each other. Years later, as they were both fresh out of a relationship, the two met again and gradually found comfort and healing in each other. Next thing they knew, they are in love.

“We were sharing experiences—what happened, why it didn’t work out. From there, mas palagi na kaming magkasama,” the blushing bride shares. Miko, meanwhile, had another thing in mind. “Little did she know na ‘the moves’ ko na pala ’yun. Kunwari, I was the shoulder to lean on, pero may hidden agenda pala,” he laughs. “But look where we are now!”

From their days as students and co-athletes in UP Diliman (where they went on dates like normal university couples do) to graduating and pursuing their business, Steeze Design Studios, together, they have taken their relationship to new heights with each and every milestone they share.

A laidback couple

Overall, despite small bumps on the road, it’s easy for Miko and Kaira to maintain their relationship; it was smooth sailing as their personality as a couple is laid-back. “Sobrang chill lang kami,” the groom points out.

She’s a straight-forward kind of woman, he says. “If he did something na hindi ko masyadong type, I tell him agad,” Kaira shares. He, on the other hand, is consistent and understanding, she says. “I really appreciate na since years ago until now, he’s the same. He’s also very supportive of everything I want to do in life. Bina-balance niya ako,” Kaira further reveals. For this couple, this dynamic works—their no-fuss relationship has its own magic that creates an even stronger bond. The fact that they balance and complement each other is what they most appreciate about the teamwork they have established.

Their secret to a lasting relationship? Communication. “Everything naman, kaya namang mapag-usapan. ’Pag may problema, madadaan mo sa maayos na communication. Hindi kayo nagsasakalan. I think that's the secret recipe,” the Kapamilya hunk shares.

Kaira adds, “I think if you communicate well, dadating talaga kayo sa point na lahat kaya ninyong pag-usapan. Masasabi mo ang lahat ng concerns mo sa relationship and maiintindihan niya.” And of course, trust will always be a part of the equation. “If you trust that person so much, and hindi ka rin naman niya binibigyan ng reason not to trust, it's so easy. The relationship would be so easy,” Miko’s other half remarks.

A simple celebration

When asked about the sweetest thing her partner ever did for her, Kaira giddily replies, “The engagement.” After hiking three kilometers to the top of the mountains of Wondaeri one winter day, Miko got down on one knee and popped the question. “It’s just a simple plan, kasi alam kong she would appreciate it more than a big gesture,” Miko says about the proposal that took place in December 2019.

“No way!” was the former football star’s initial response when one of the biggest surprises of her life was unfolding right in front of her. “Akala ko talaga, hindi seryoso. Hindi ko talaga in-expect ’yun,” she recalls. After realizing that the proposal was actually happening, there was no other word to say but yes.

Then they flew back to the Philippines weeks after, only to be greeted with news about the global health pandemic. Regardless of the uncertainties it brought and continues to bring, they proceeded to plan their big day. They booked the venue, made a guestlist, the works—come the lockdown, they decided to tweak their original plan because of the quarantine restrictions.

Their initial plans may have changed, but looking on the brighter side of things, this actually worked to their advantage. Despite the circumstances, they found ways to make their dream wedding come true.

They decided to gather their loved ones at the Bella Rosa Gardens in Tagaytay City. Simple with a hint of nostalgic feeling, the rustic theme of the wedding goes well with the natural aesthetic of their venue of choice. A touch of DIY elements put the unique spin into Miko and Kaira’s union. “We want our guests to focus on us kaysa sa decorations,” the latter details.

But more than the wedding itself, the new Mr. & Mrs. are more excited to finally enter the next chapter of their lives together. “’Yung wedding, yes, it's a celebration of our love. Pero I would say it’s just for formality. Kasi hindi mo naman masusukat ’yung love sa wedding lang eh,” Miko muses. “After the wedding, ang haba ng buhay namin together.”

Congratulations to newlyweds Miko and Kaira!
