Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante Talks About Self-Empowerment Through Her Latest Role As Cynthia Weil
“Cynthia Weil is such a firecracker. She never once doubts that she will succeed,” theater actress Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante said. “I, too, am relentless in working towards the things I want.” Mikkie plays the role of the award-winning American songwriter and Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee in Atlantis Theatrical’s "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical," which opened at the Meralco Theatre last June 14.
The Tony, Olivier, and Grammy Award-winning musical tells the story of music legend Carole King’s early life and career, a significant part of which she spent with Cynthia, her friend and rival. Mikkie as Cynthia shares the stage with Kayla Rivera as Carole King and Nick Varricchio as Carole’s writing partner and husband, Gerry Goffin.

It takes a certain level of maturity and understanding to do justice to the role of someone who has such depth of character and impressive body of work, but there’s no doubt that Mikkie can pull it off each and every time. She believes being onstage was her destiny—like “how fulfilled a fish feels when he’s in water,” theater acting always puts her in her element. Mikkie shared, “I get a high off of the energies shared in the company. The selflessness of every person working towards a goal. The world would be such an incredible place if we approached life with a thespian’s mindset.”
Mikkie has a bottomless well of motivation and inspiration in what she knows she does best. She was a single mom at 18 years old, but she was able to raise a child properly, and these serve as constant reminders of how strong and resilient she can be. “I’m proud of the way I’ve raised my daughter… somehow I’ve raised the sassiest, most inquisitive little girl. I must have done something right,” she said.
As it turned out, theater not only gave her a meaningful and purposeful career, it also gave her one of the best gifts she could ever ask for: a partner to raise her daughter with. Theater work brought her closer to Nyoy Volante whom she married in 2016. Mikkie was last seen on the Atlantis stage as Lauren in the re-staging of Tony-winning musical "Kinky Boots," which starred Nyoy as drag queen Lola.
Quoting a memorable line by her character Cynthia, Mikkie shared, “’My career is what matters to me’—at a time when women were expected to give up their lives to get married, have children and devote themselves to raising a family, Cynthia decided she wanted to be her own woman and pursued her true passion. That took some serious moxie—especially in an industry that was primarily run by men.”
Similarly, Mikkie is a mother and a wife, but she’s also her own woman. She gets to fulfil these roles well because she is, first and foremost, whole, empowered, and confident in herself.
