Broadway’s Nick Varricchio Lands His First Lead Role In Manila With "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical"
“On a chill November morning, I received an email out of the blue from my old friend, Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante, with whom I performed in Atlantis' 'Saturday Night Fever' in 2015,” Nick Varricchio recalls how he found out about the opportunity to play the role of Carole King’s writing partner and husband, Gerry Goffin, in Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group’s "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical." "I learned that our director Bobby Garcia was looking for me, and I suddenly lost my appetite to finish my eggs and bacon, which is rare. Immediately I hushed, 'Whatever it is, the answer is, Yes, I'll do it!'”
Hollywood’s classic Golden Age movie-musicals, which Nick used to watch on Sunday afternoons with his mom, were what inspired him to study at Baldwin Wallace University’s Conservatory of Music, and eventually pursue a career as a theater actor. At one point, he had doubts about his chosen path. But then he had the chance to perform in "The Light in the Piazza" in July of 2010 at the historical barn theatre Rabbit Run in Madison, Ohio, and its director, Brint Learned, helped him rediscover the joy of acting.
He has since devoted himself to a constant pursuit of betterment at his craft. Nick’s musical theatre credits also include "A Chorus Line," "Happy Days," and "Spring Awakening." "Beautiful" casts him in his first major role in Manila theater. Nick has nothing but good words for the local theater scene which he thinks is “unparalleled” in how it nurtures incredibly passionate actors.
Nick plays the role of Gerry Goffin opposite Kayla Rivera, who plays the role of music icon Carole King, in what he defines as “a story of love in the music.” He said, “I am so honored to be here. This is one of those singular moments in life—I am doing what I love… The old adage is true, ‘Don't blink, or you'll miss it.’”
Nick shares that this role has allowed him to stretch himself as an artist and craftsman. It is, however, an opportunity that comes with much responsibility, which he gladly took on. “In preparation for this role, I had a fairly consistent process. Mornings involved practicing piano and singing. In the afternoon, I would swim at the YMCA in Long Island City. My book rotation come evening would be Carole King's A Natural Woman, my elementary language course, Tara, Mag-Tagalog Tayo!, and Living with Someone Who's Living with Bipolar Disorder for research,” Nick detailed.
The Tony, Olivier, and Grammy Award-winning musical "Beautiful," which tells the story of music legend Carole King’s early life and career, opened at the Meralco Theatre on June 14, 2019 and will run until July 7, 2019. Heart (and lots of it!) will greet and embrace the audience as Nick promises to deliver a remarkable performance that will not only showcase his character’s humanity but also “spark compassion and empathy for the love Gerry and Carole shared.”
