Have you seen his latest K-Drama, "More Than Friends," yet?
Rising Hallyu star Ong Seong-wu might be a new name to even the most hardcore K-Drama fan, but that's not to say that his talent doesn't shine! The 25-year-old, though fairly new to acting, is actually a K-pop star crossing over to the small screen with his biggest projects to date coming out just this year.

In the series, his character is in love with his friend (Shin Ye-eun) but couldn't confess his feelings for her; she likes him too. Exploring his talents
Ong Seong-wu has his mom to thank for giving him the push he needed to explore his musical capabilities. He never really thought of performing professionally, either as an actor or a singer, but he developed a taste for music when he eventually gave playing the drums a try. In fact, he found that he enjoyed music so much that it influenced his choice of school, both at the secondary and university levels. As a teenager and a young adult, he focused most of his educational pursuits towards becoming a better performer. He majored in dance and acting as a college student.
Music debut
He was in high school when he officially began his entertainment career. Scouted by a talent agent, he was only 13 at the time, and so began his journey of training to become a K-idol. Unfortunately, his musical debut was delayed by unresolved issues within his former management, and it would only be five years later when he would again sign with a different agency. He's currently a Fantagio talent, and he's been with them for four years. It was at Fantagio that he made his onscreen debut and released his first solo projects as a singer.
TV debut
His TV debut was unconventional by many standards. He didn't start out as an extra, or an actor playing bit roles and cameos, and instead, he joined "Produce 101" in its second season. The show essentially lets viewers "build" their very own boyband by watching contestants on the show and voting on which of them get to join the final group. He finished in its fifth place, and became 1 out of the 11 members of the boyband Wanna One. The group was just around for a year from 2017 to 2018, but Ong Seong-wu proved his staying power in the industry by becoming one of Wanna One's few members whose careers continued post-boyband fame.
Solo career
Just months after Wanna One disbanded, Ong Seong-wu successfully launched his solo career. He has released a couple of singles in the past which have been included in the soundtracks of K-Dramas "At Eighteen" and "More Than Friends," but finally came out with his very own album in March just this year. The record is called "Layers," and he has since put out two tracks: "We Belong" and "Gravity."
Carving a niche
As for his acting career, Ong Seong-wu is just beginning to find his niche. It was only in 2017, when he was 22, that he officially made his acting debut, and since then, has only played lead roles twice. He has starred in one film, a musical titled "Life is Beautiful," and he's also the star of two K-Dramas: "At Eighteen" and "More Than Friends." If you're looking to get your Ong Seong-wu acting fix, we definitely recommend checking out "At Eighteen" first; the drama earned him six best new actor nominations, four of which he won. "At Eighteen" has him playing a troubled teenager punished for an act he didn't commit and forced to reckon with consequences.
Humble beginnings
Outside of his life as a celebrity, Ong Seong-wu is known to be a pretty laidback guy. He's often described as approachable and down-to-earth, attributes mostly owed to the fact that he and his family had humble beginnings before getting to enjoy the fruits of his labor. Before making it into t he industry as a K-idol, it's no secret that Ong Seong-wu needed to take on part-time jobs to be able to pay for basic necessities and help his family out. He's never forgotten this time in his life and in interviews, he never fails to mention how in awe he is of his own accomplishments and how far he's gone from then to now.
Private life
Last but not least, Ong Seong-wu is reportedly still single! His type? Someone older than him who he can depend on to take care of him. He also doesn't turn down the idea of a romance developing from a close friendship. Despite being in the industry for at least four years, he hasn't actually been publicly linked to a Korean actress or singer. His Instagram account is pretty limited to selfies, BTS shots at work, reposts of photo shoot images, him in dressing rooms or sets at work. He's a private person overall! He's mentioned that if you want to get to know him better, check out his album "Layers," because it's an extremely personal project that's inspired by all his life's lessons and realizations to date.
More Than Friends is available on VIU and iQIYI.
