Local And International Personalities Pay Tribute To Karl Lagerfeld, An Icon
The passing of Karl Lagerfeld has left not just the fashion industry but the world in mourning. The German creative director, fashion designer, artist, and photographer greatly contributed to the growth and development of fashion, as creative director of fashion powerhouse Chanel since 1983, and of his eponymous fashion label. He worked closely with other brands like Fendi, Balmain, and Chloé, and served as one of the pillars of modern luxury fashion.
In the words of Anna Wintour, editor of American Vogue, when she presented him the Outstanding Achievement Award at the British Fashion Awards in 2015, “More than anyone I know, [Karl Lagerfeld] represents the soul of fashion: restless, forward-looking and voraciously attentive to our changing culture.”
And forever etched in our hearts and immortalized in every fashion piece that will walk down the runway will be his legacy, and his iconic white hair-black sunglasses-high collar combo that only an icon like Karl could ever pull off.
Here is a glimpse of the world paying tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, who is truly an icon in the global fashion scene.
French fashion house Chanel, of course, led the tribute for the man who was behind their success throughout the years.
It is with deep sadness that the House of CHANEL announces the passing of Karl Lagerfeld, the Creative Director for the CHANEL Fashion House since 1983. An extraordinary creative individual, Karl Lagerfeld reinvented the brand’s codes created by Gabrielle Chanel: the CHANEL jacket and suit, the little black dress, the precious tweeds, the two-tone shoes, the quilted handbags, the pearls and costume jewelry. Regarding Gabrielle Chanel, he said, “My job is not to do what she did, but what she would have done. The good thing about Chanel is it is an idea you can adapt to many things.” A prolific creative mind with endless imagination, Karl Lagerfeld explored many artistic horizons, including photography and short films. The House of CHANEL benefited from his talent for all the branding campaigns related to Fashion since 1987. Finally, one cannot refer to Karl Lagerfeld without mentioning his innate sense of repartee and self-mockery. Alain Wertheimer, CEO of CHANEL, said: “Thanks to his creative genius, generosity and exceptional intuition, Karl Lagerfeld was ahead of his time, which widely contributed to the House of CHANEL’s success throughout the world. Today, not only have I lost a friend, but we have all lost an extraordinary creative mind to whom I gave carte blanche in the early 1980s to reinvent the brand.” Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Fashion at CHANEL, said: “Fashion show after fashion show, collection after collection, Karl Lagerfeld left his mark on the legend of Gabrielle Chanel and the history of the House of CHANEL. He steadfastly promoted the talent and expertise of CHANEL’s ateliers and Métiers d’Art, allowing this exceptional know-how to shine throughout the world. The greatest tribute we can pay today is to continue to follow the path he traced by – to quote Karl – ‘continuing to embrace the present and invent the future’.” Virginie Viard, Director of CHANEL’s Fashion Creation Studio and Karl Lagerfeld’s closest collaborator for more than 30 years, has been entrusted by Alain Wertheimer with the creative work for the collections, so that the legacy of Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld can live on.
Apart from Chanel, Karl enormously worked with other brands and fashion houses throughout his career. He was unanimously credited for constantly reinventing and reviving the Fendi baguette bag, what is now a cult fashion item that every celebrity and fashion enthusiast considers a staple in their closets.
Before working with Chanel, Karl started to build his name at fashion house Chloé. In a statement in their social media pages, the brand said that Karl continues to inspire every designer at Chloé for his "softly feminine, slightly irreverent designs, to his strong visual instinct."
One of Karl's many iconic collaborations also include his signature designs at H&M, which was the first-ever collaboration of H&M with a fashion designer way back in 2004.
In 2014, Karl also worked with Louis Vuitton to create a show-stopping punching bag, trunk, and suitcase set. Talking about his creation, Karl quoted French writer Voltaire, saying, "Everything which needs an explanation, isn't worth the explanation."
Karl brought a vision of femininity to Chloé that remains ever-present in our hearts today. We are forever grateful for his 25 years with the Maison. From his softly feminine, slightly irreverent designs, to his strong visual instinct, he has inspired every designer at Chloé. He will be remembered with enduring affection.
”It saddens me to hear that Karl has passed away, he will be greatly missed. He remains an icon and his contribution to fashion cannot be underestimated. I fondly remember the first meetings we had when discussing the collaboration H&M did with him in 2004: the discussions about which items should be in the collection, the fitting sessions and when he invited the H&M-team to a private lunch in his town house on Rive Gauche.” Margareta van den Bosch Creative Advisor
All of us at the House of Dior are deeply saddened by news of Karl Lagerfeld’s passing. He will be greatly missed by everyone in the fashion world. Pietro Beccari, Chairman and CEO of Christian Dior Couture, said: “Karl has been for me and my wife much more than just someone I worked with. He entered our life as a tornado and we became friends. Many words will be said about his talent and genius, but I would like to single out his profound culture. Indeed, you could speak with him for hours about any subject and he always had his well-informed point of view. He had an immense sensibility and he behaved like a gentleman with all the teams and at every level. Karl had an enormous generosity with the people he loved. We feel gifted to have met him on our path and deeply honored to be his friend. The huge sorrow will not, in any way, take away the incredible memories and moments we shared together. How to forget the first Haute Couture show of Fendi in Paris, the Trevi Fountain show and his eyes the first time he entered our new offices at Palazzo della Civiltà. He was a giant and I do not think there will be anybody like him anymore. He leaves a huge empty gap in the world of fashion and we will miss him a lot.”
Today, Louis Vuitton honors Karl Lagerfeld, a long-standing friend of the house. CEO Michael Burke shared: “Karl adopted me when I was in need of a friend in Rome! We became partners in crime, and wrote history on the Great Wall of China. Aim high, shoot for the stars. You will always be our guiding light.”
We would like to express our sincere and heartfelt sadness for the passing of Mr. Karl Lagerfeld. The world of fashion has lost one of its purest and most incredible talents; he will be greatly missed but his legacy will always be there to remind us what creativity means. Photo from @ChanelOfficial
His fellow fashion designers and friends in the industry have also taken a moment of silence to pay their respects to the man who inspired them all. Coming straight from these people who worked closely with him, they have no words enough to capture Karl's genius and eye for fashion and beauty.
I’m sad to hear that the one and only @KarlLagerfeld has passed. He was a giant in my industry and a man who gave me and so many others an abundance of wonderful opportunities and experiences in fashion, art and life. Truly, this is the end to an era. #karllagerfeld pic.twitter.com/LrXAcOVSvb— Coco Rocha (@cocorocha) February 19, 2019
“I hate the idea of being heavily remembered.” Today we mourn the loss of one of the most prolific designers of both the 20th and 21st centuries, who died today aged 85. And of course, designers and celebrities, international and local, have all joined in and share their love for the man who influenced many of them to design and reinvent their fashion and style. Some were fortunate enough to have had a close encounter with Karl himself, while some were grateful to have looked up to him as a role model.
After my first campaign you were asked on French television what you thought of me and you said you would have to meet me to truly know. I sent the interview to my French girl friend to translate and was elated you knew of my existence. Years later during fashion week in Paris you and your family walked into the restaurant my team and i were in and sat at the table next to us. All i could do was stare as this legend was sitting an arm stretch away. I got up and walked passed your table only to go to the bathroom and check my hair before strutting to your table and introducing myself. You told me you knew who i was and that the grace i walked with reminded you of a young Naomi Campbell. Wow.. those words will ring in my head forever and they tell me that no matter what i need to continue working hard for my dreams. I’m happy i got to know what you thought of me. You’re greatly missed. I’m honoured to have ever been in your presence. Sending my love to the Lagerfeld family, you’re in my prayers ??????
You brought so much beauty, style and grace to this world. Karl, you will forever be a true legend, an icon, an inspiration. It was such a thrill and a pleasure to have met you, to have worked with you, and to have experienced the amazing times when you would photograph my girls for your beautiful campaigns. There will never be another like you, my dear friend, and you will be truly missed. ??#KarlLagerfeld @karllagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld didn’t breath oxygen. He breathed fashion. He had both an artistic and a business eye that defined what a modern fashion house should be. He lived one hundred lives and his creative brain was always looking at the future instead of looking at the past. I will miss his energy, his dedication and love towards an industry that crowned him as the greatest Kaiser. Thank you for all the unforgettable fashion memories and inspiration you created. Thank you for all the advice you have given me in all of these years. RIP my dear Karl, you will be terribly missed.
There are a handful of moments when I get truly “star struck” the kind that leaves you completely shaking with delight & Joy! One of this was In Paris 2010 when @nixalanon spotted @karllagerfeld coming out of a silver Hummer. We politely asked for a photo w him. his super hot bodyguards told us no photographs but Mr. Lagerfeld was so kind to oblige us with a photo. This was taken outside his favorite bookstore. It was the highlight of our trip. We lost a great human being. ?????? #restinpower
A titanium Hummer pulled up on Rue de Rivoli. Two beautiful boys came out, then out came Lola Karl. I politely asked for a photo and just when his friends were about to refuse, he stopped them and said it was alright- so @rajolaurel happily took turns having our photos taken with him ?? . RIP to this legend #karllagerfeld ?? Taken in front of his favorite book shop, Galignani; Paris, 2010.
Karl, I will miss your indescribable presence, watching your calm, quiet, genius mind working, your little jokes, amazing stories, and experiencing the clothes, sets, and productions only you could dream up. Thank you for believing in me and for the beautiful, incredible opportunities you brought to my career, but mostly, thank you for giving me the honor of knowing the magic behind the myth. There will never be another Karl Lagerfeld. I am overwhelmed with sadness today, but also with so much love, admiration, and gratitude for you. To all his beloved friends and colleagues, and his favorite girl Choupette??, my heart is with you. ?? Rest In Peace King Karl. I didn’t want this day to come. ??
