"They Make Me Happy"—Sharon Cuneta On SHINee And K-Pop
The Megastar is in full K-pop mode in her newest vlog for her YouTube channel
Celebrities, they’re just like us!
Over the years, more and more celebrities have revealed themselves to be self-confessed Korean pop culture fanatics—from Anne Curtis to Lea Salonga, and Liza Soberano to Sharon Cuneta. The Korean wave (or "Hallyu") is just way too strong to resist, whether it’s dramas, movies, or pop music.
In her last vlog for her YouTube channel, Megastar Sharon Cuneta sat down to talk about some of the greatest loves of her life: the members and music of SHINee, a South Korean boy band known for their hit songs, “Replay,” “View,” and “Ring Ding Dong.”
Surrounded by posters, lightsticks, albums, and shirts, the Megastar sat down with her viewers and fellow K-pop fans for a 20-minute long discussion about the Korean boy band, as well as quick mentions of other K-ent icons, including Park Bo-gum, NCT 127 (the first K-pop group that she fell in love with), Parasite and Bong Joon-ho, and of course, Hyun Bin from the recent K-drama hit Crash Landing on You.
The video, titled “Mega SHINee Special,” is a follow-up to her previous video where she gushed and fangirled about K-drama and K-pop at length.
Here, the Megastar talked about SHINee’s members, from Key, who caught her eye first; Taemin, who reminds her of Michael Jackson; Minho, who she sees a son; Onew, the group’s leader; and Jonghyun, whose passing still makes her emotional up to this day (she even a wore a shirt with his photo on it in remembrance of him).
Sharon also revealed that she has received comments about her being “too old” to be liking K-pop. To this, she said: “SHINee is good, no matter what age you are.”
She also talked about her own experiences as a singer, dancer, and entertainer—even telling the boys that she can be their “momma” in the Philippines. After all, she’s been singing since she was 12, acting since she was 15, and she knows the feeling of wanting to hide and get away from everyone—a feeling that everyone feels, no doubt, but is of course a lot more intense when you’re someone in the public eye.
Sharon went on to explain the reasons why she loves the group: their music, the complicated dances, and the fact that they sing live very well. “I’m a proud SHINee fan,” Sharon proclaimed. “I am not ashamed of it. I love it because they make me happy.”
She also read out a letter from Onew’s fan club, of which she’s a member. “Fandoms are not just fandoms,” she said, saying that she is reminded of her own fans, the Sharonians. “They are people who get together for the good of other people.”
“Fans are not to be looked down on, ever,” Sharon added. “Celebrities must always be kind to their fans. I hope SHINee’s like that.”
