Belle Mariano is letting us all in into a different world she inhabits. This time around, she’s not the feisty yet softie Maxpein of He’s Into Her nor the pragmatic and hardworking Ayef of An Inconvenient Love. The Belle in DonBelle is making way for the singer-songwriter (and even producer) in her to shine.

Fresh from last month’s release of her sophomore album Somber (a follow-up to her 2021 debut album Daylight) and news of her upcoming solo Beloved concert this July 22, 2023 at New Frontier Theater, Belle Mariano chats with Metro.Style in a different persona and capacity. This time, we meet Belle as a musician.

The New Gen Phenomenal Star’s Somber album is described as “an introspective delve into the complex stages of loss. It is a musical representation of having sand slip between your fingers with no time to gather what has scattered, but it is also a reminder that nothing is ever permanent, and that even grief is replaceable with hope and peace. Such are the waves of life that flow back and forth from somber to solemn.”

The pensive and sentimental album is a moody glimpse into the musicality that the young singer-songwriter is showcasing for this era, at least.“I wanted something that will connect to the previous album I’ve done. Gusto kong magkaroon ng parang storytelling na what’s next after Daylight? Of course, we have to go through the hardships of life in order for us to reach that Solemn [state],” Belle begins.

“It’s acoustic but if there is one word to describe this album, Somber, it would be gloomy. It’s gloomy but at the same time, relatable and there’s a factor of hope as well,” she says, adding and clarifying that it’s not depressing.

Belle’s sophomore album also marks her debut as a songwriter and producer as she gets credits for penning some of the songs in the album. This is the side of her that she hopes to show more of in the future.“Hopefully, in the future in my next album, I’ll be able to write and produce more songs. I’m so grateful for this opportunity. It’s my first time to write songs and sobrang nakakatuwa. Lumaki ’yung knowledge ko about the music industry,” the Star Magic artist happily shares.

The actress-singer particularly gets songwriting credits on the tracks “Roadtrip” and “Somber & Solemn” and as co-producer on all songs of the album.

The song “Roadtrip” talks about compromises made in relationships and how it just can’t be done sometimes. When values, lifestyles and destinies differ between people, the journey together sometimes ends.

“When it came to conceptualizing “Roadtrip,” doon talaga kami pinaka-nahirapan kasi we really needed something that would fit the album Somber. Somber means dull, gloomy so we really need to think of a sad song. And then I was scrolling through Instagram and I came across this old saying na ‘you may walk at the same pace with the person but you’re going different directions.’ And that’s what we came up with [as the song’s] whole concept and then sina Sir Rox [Santos, Star Pop label head], Cesca and I started to talk naOo nga, no?’ The three of us have a lot of differences like we may be here on the same day now pero after all of it, we’re going to part ways. So that’s how it was [for this song],” Belle explains.

On the contrary, conceptualizing the song “Somber & Solemn” was described by Belle as “fun.”

“Co-writing this song with Jeremy G, Tricia Denise, Sir Rox and Cesca— it was such a fun process. The four of us were chatting about our faith. What if we write something about ‘huwag mong labanan iyong current, magpadala ka sa current.’ So the ocean symbolizes God. Sobrang funny kasi somehow na-relate namin iyong song sa theory na nakita ko on Finding Nemo. Ibig sabihin daw ng Nemo is ‘no one’ so it means Finding No One. Sabi ko, ‘Oo nga, ano?’ You don’t have to find anyone, you just have to find yourself and find the peace God gave you,” she ponders.

Clearly, the process of coming out with her second album has been creatively satisfying and exciting for Belle.“Siguro ang pinaka-climax while making the album is kapag nabubuo na namin iyong song when we did the songwriting sessions. Kapag tina-try na namin syang kantahin sa recording studio, parang may sense of fulfillment na ‘Oh my gosh! I’m able to write my very first song!’ And then we conceptualized this na on the spot biglang whoa! It’s like magic,” she excitedly says.

She’s looking forward to expand her knowledge about music and explore other areas where she could excel as a singer.“This album is leaning more into the acoustic so but I can’t wait to explore more genres of course. I want to try different genres para malaman ko talaga kung ano iyong fit sa voice ko,” Belle says.

In the future, she would love to collaborate with fellow artists like Moira, Sunkissed Lola, and of course, the artist Belle admires so much as a singer and as a storyteller—Taylor Swift.“I told earlier na I’m in my Taylor Swift era. Her brain when it comes to songwriting is just so amazing. Ang galing! Storyteller talaga siya. Ang galing niyang magsulat ng kanta, and I want to be like her someday. I’d like to be able to inspire people like her someday,” she dreamily gushes.

The young singer-songwriter has a lot to be excited for. One is how she would showcase her talents and musical skills to adoring and supportive fans this July 22 with the Beloved concert.

“Fans can look forward to a lot of stuff. Ang daming pasabog. Siyempre I won’t spoil anything but I’ll make sure that everyone’s going to enjoy the concert and will really feel the journey—the whole journey of the Somber & Solemn,” Belle teases.

“Being with the fans up close and personal and being live. I’m excited sa lahat. Iyong visuals, iyong mapaparamdam ko sa kanila, kung makukuha ba nila iyong message ng concert. I’m very excited for all of those things,” she concludes with a sweet grin, raring to go onstage and surprise her fans at the show already.

Belle might be busy with the album release and the concert but she will soon be seen through the series Can’t Buy Me Love opposite Donny Pangilinan.
