Are Son Ye-Jin And Lee Sun-Gyun Set To Star In Their First-Ever Hollywood Movie?
The movie, titled "Cross," will have the Korean superstars star alongside Australian actor Sam Worthington in their potential Hollywood debut!
K-fever just got realer. It's so real that even Hollywood has recognized the box-office potential and undeniable talent offered by Korean actors, a phenomenon marked by none other than a collaboration between heavyweight Korean stars Son Ye-jin (Crash Landing on You, Something in the Rain, ) and Lee Sun-gyun (My Mister, Diary of a Prosecutor, Parasite) with Australian actor Sam Worthington (Avatar, Hacksaw Ridge, Fractured).
Both the Korean stars' agencies have confirmed that they are in discussions to finalize plans for the project.
The project, titled Cross, will reportedly tell the story of a new world where multi-culture countries exist.
Taking inspiration from none other than Korea itself and its Northern and Southern halves, the fictional country Cross will focus on is similarly divided into two, with one half being modern, powerful, and wealthy, while the other is far less influential and developed.
On the other hand, Lee Sun-gyun has his eyes on Gideon, a tough but charismatic leader responsible for the protection of the border, while Sam Worthington may portray a still unnamed wealthy character.
The film's title might very well hint at an adventure-drama focusing on one (or all!) of these lead characters participating in a dangerous and illegal border crossing.
Should the film push through, it will be Son Ye-jin's foray into Hollywood; in 2012, she starred in the film The Tower which was inspired by the 1974 Hollywood film The Towering Inferno. Lee Sun-gyun, who could also be cast in a Hollywood film for the very first time, has already gotten a taste of fame in the west, thanks to his role as Mr. Park in Bong Joon-ho's Oscar-winning movie Parasite.
To emphasize the the importance of the roles Son Ye-jin and Lee Sun-gyun will be playing, Cross' director Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show, The Terminal, Gattaca) has supposedly been working on this film for years but only moved forward with production after visiting Korea in 2019. Gathering inspiration from its history and familiarizing himself with its local stars, he then made the move to specifically choose Son Ye-jin to play Cross' leading lady.
If all goes well, Cross is set to begin filming in Korea by March 2021.
