The Way Vice Ganda Honored His Mom Through His Cosmetics Line Will Touch Your Heart

Before becoming one of the most influential comedians and hosts in the country; before becoming a blockbuster movie star, an endorser, and an author; before the fame, the cameras, and the millions of followers on Instagram, Jose Marie Viceral, popularly known as Vice Ganda, was once a little boy who snuck around his house to play with his mother’s prized possession: her lipstick.

But one day, when he accidentally broke her lipstick, his mom told him something he would always remember. “Anak, wala na lipstick ko. Hindi ko pa siya tapos bayaran.” 

Because she couldn’t afford to buy one off the counter, his mom paid for her lipstick in installments. At a young age, Vice Ganda realized just how inaccessible beauty products are to so many. He wished to one day change the rules—he knew he had to. “Gusto kong mag-bigay ng produkto na hindi kailangang gastusan nang malaki. Gusto kong gumawa ng lipstick na hindi ika-hihirap ng mga tao.” 

But why lipstick? For the comedian, lipstick is more than a beauty product—it is power. “Kahit ano'ng nanay, kahit ano'ng estado sa buhay, mahirap man o mayaman, magkano man ang sweldo, may trabaho man o wala, meron at meron 'yang lipstick,” shares the celebrity-turned-makeup-maven in an exclusive interview with Metro.Style.




A mother can wear lipstick to her children’s baptisms, birthdays, enrollments, PTA meetings, and even to their graduation ceremonies. She wears one everywhere: to the market, to meet her friends, and to church. 

For Vice Ganda, a lipstick is a mother’s companion during different seasons in life, a source of confidence—and even strength. “Kahit hirap na hirap na siya sa buhay, kaya ng lipstick mag-bigay ng kulay sa mukha ng isang babae. Hindi na masyadong nababanaag ang hirap na nararamdaman niya.

In 2017, Vice Ganda finally realized his dream, launching his makeup line, Vice Cosmetics. With the motto "Ganda for All," he introduced quality products, reaching out to his supporters among the masses. Recently, before it turned a year old, Vice Cosmetics presented its latest collaboration, Vice X Bang, where the TV host partnered with celebrity stylist and fashion designer Bang Pineda in creating new lip kits. True to Vice Ganda’s vision, each product is accessible to all, no matter their age, gender, or social class. 



When asked about  one thing he learned from putting up the business, Vice Ganda was certain: “You have to know your market, and you have to love them. Because if you don’t give them their money’s worth, edi pinagkaka-kitahan mo lang sila.

Today, his mom doesn’t have to fall into debt for lipstick. She can have as much as she wants—and so can millions of other moms.
