“Queen of Rock ‘N’ Roll” and American-born singer-songwriter Tina Turner died at 83 years old earlier today (Philippine Standard Time). According to her publicist Bernard Doherty, the global icon had a peaceful passing in her Switzerland home after battling a long illness. “With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model,” Bernard said in his statement. “There will be a private funeral ceremony attended by close friends and family. Please respect the privacy of her family at this difficult time.”

With more than six decades of musical career under her belt, Tina has indeed one of the longest career tracks in rock music. She was born in 1939, and rose to stardom in the ’60s as the other half of the electrifying Ike and Tina Turner duo. The industry multi-hyphenate has been living in Switzerland since 1994, and got married again to German actor and music producer Erwin Bach. In 2013, she finally earned her Swiss citizenship.

Known for her undisputed stage presence and signature voice, Tina Turner has won a total of eight Grammy Awards in her lifetime, is a three-time Grammy Hall of Fame inductee, and a 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. In the ’70s, she launched a solo act that led her to becoming one of the most prolific and highest-selling female music artists. In the 1980s, she was racking up records with her hits “Private Dancer,” “We Don’t Need Another Hero, and “What’s Love Got to Do With It.

Following Tina’s “Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour, which ran from 2008 to 2009, she eventually retired from the entertainment orbit to lead a quiet life with her husband Erwin. In March 2021, an HBO documentary film about Tina and her life was then released, where she opened up about the untold details of her private life, her marital issues with former husband Ike Turner, and her personal and professional struggles.
