Here's What ABS-CBN Execs Have To Say About The New Darna, Jane De Leon
Praise continues to pour in for Jane de Leon, the fresh-faced actress chosen to portray Philippine komiks heroine Darna onscreen.
The 20-year-old who has previously starred in primetime shows Halik and La Luna Sangre bested more than 200 Darna hopefuls during her audition and earned acclaim from the judging panel, the members of which are seasoned television and movie execs known for their star-spotting abilities.
Here's what they had to say!
Star Magic Chairman Johnny Manahan (a.k.a. Mr. M)
Star maker Mr. M said he always felt that there was something about Jane's "quiet confidence and mastery in her performances" that would take her to new heights. The man, who helped lay down the foundations of the careers of the biggest Kapamilya celebrities today even made sure that Jane try out for the role, because he believed in her capabilities—and growing star power—that much.
Director Jerrold Tarog
Of course, it was crucial for the film's direcor to see something special in the talents he would soon be working with. And for Jerrold Tarog, his official statement about Jane's casting suggests that she proved to be the actress who could "carry the role." That is, more than appearances, number of fans, and filmography, it was talent and grasp of the character's qualities and motivations that made Jane a "unanimous choice" for the judging panel.
ABS-CBN Chief Content Officer Charo Santos-Concio
Charo Santos-Concio kept her comments short and sweet, however, she did give a piece of advice for Jane: to enjoy her rise to the top (because it's going to be one heck of a ride!), but never forget to stay grounded.
Star Cinema's executive advisor Malou Santos
Malou Santos couldn't contain her excitement about Jane's casting and how her interview with the actress made a lasting impression. Describing Jane as the actress perfect for introducing the iconic Pinoy heroine to a new generation, Malou was also all blown away by Jane's hundred percent commitment to the character and the fact that many of her own values reflect those of Darna's.
Star Cinema's managing director Olivia Lamasan
According to Olivia Lamasan, Jane displayed an undeniable instinct in front of the camera that was so palpable that more than one person in her team noticed. There was clearly something about Jane's innocence that goes hand in hand with her strength of character that was fitting for the Darna that they wished to portray.
Before Jane, at least 13 actresses have portrayed Darna in television and in film. The newly engaged Angel Locsin, Marian Rivera, and Sharon Cuneta are some of the women who have breathed life into this icon of female strength and power.
