Girl groups come and go but there’s just something about BINI that makes it seem like their popularity is built to last. In today’s world of vapid media consumption, having one hit song (even two) doesn’t always guarantee a kind of success that lasts beyond one news cycle. Whether it’s their catchy songs that just find ways to get stuck in our heads all day, their viral social media moments that give birth to memes and dance challenges, or their unique style that deserves its own color palette, all paths lead to becoming a Bloom.

Now we could go on and on about their awards and accolades (the latest being their Best Asia Act award at the MTV Europe Music Awards), and we’d be here all day. But as any OG Bloom would know, that’s not what made BINI who they are today. BINI has been able to break down all boundaries by exuding a kind of fun that can sometimes be unhinged but always feels inviting.

If you’ve ever experienced BINI in some form online, you’ve probably thought: “It would probably be nice to hang out and be friends with Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna, and Sheena.” Neither manufactured nor forced, you feel their closeness which makes you want to stan them even harder.

A year after they finally broke out to the mainstream by releasing a perennial summer anthem, “Pantropiko,” in November, everyone and everyone’s mom are still talking, posting, and commenting about them. There’s just something about BINI and their friendship that draws you in and makes you want to hangout or even do TikTok videos with them.

Curious about their undeniable chemistry, we asked BINI, “if you could make a rule for BINI that every member has to follow, what would it be?” These are the eight rules of the BINI sisterhood.

SHEENA’S RULE: “Walang ma-le-late.”
“Siyempre may times na may hindi magigising sa alarm pero kasi girl group kami so damay lahat,” says Sheena Catacutan, the so-called “unserious” one. She has gone viral most famously because of her iconic “eyyy” catchphrase but listening to her talk about her career and how much their actions affect each other, shows that she might be the youngest in the group but she still takes her work as seriously as any member of BINI.

Starting as a Pinoy Big Brother housemate in 2018, Sheena continued her showbiz journey as a trainee in Star Hunt Academy along with the other members of BINI. But for her, their bonds deepened more when they were inside the BINI house.

“Parang nu’ng nag-start kami du’n, medyo divided pa kami. May mga group of friends, ganyan… Feeling ko nu’ng sobrang daming problema noon, ang napansin namin na at the end of the day, kaming walo lang din ’yung matatakbuhan namin,” she recalls, talking about their trainee days wherein nothing was certain yet.

“After a whole day of training, stressed kami, ganyan, sa dulo, pupunta kami lahat sa isang kwarto. Tapos, magiging okay na ’yung araw,” Sheena tells us. And her rule of punctuality is a nice reflection of this bond and how the girls acknowledge that each and everyone of them is responsible for how far they can take BINI.

MIKHA’S RULE: “Have everyone’s back. No snitches.”
“There would be moments when we would just hang out and have wholesome moments, and I would realize that BINI made my childhood,” says Mikha Lim.

The downside of growing up in front of people and cameras, though, is that people assume they know you completely and are privy to judging your each and every move. “I find it so annoying when I see [malicious] tweets, I’m like, that’s not even what happened. I’m just like, whatever. I don’t know, I just shrug it off,” Mikha says.

I’m just like, whatever. I don’t know, I just shrug it off,” Mikha says.
Over time, she says that she learned that just ignoring the negativity and having a solid support system is the best way to cope with the bad energy permeating social media. “I grew the most when I stepped foot into this training and being with BINI, and I feel like it’s always going to be forever because this is where we grew up. It’s like we grew up together, that’s how it felt like.”

And while she is part of the nonchalant faction of BINI, she still has her own ways of being there for her girls. She tells us, “I feel like being there is such a big factor in people’s lives… you just have to be there, listen. Spend time together.”

GWEN’S RULE: “Sabihin agad kung may problema.”
As an introvert in a group made up of OAs, you would think that Gwen Apuli would have a hard time fitting in with her loud members. Baby Blooms or new fans who are just getting into BINI might watch an online interview and assume that Gwen dislikes being with the rest of the group. “Ay, hindi naman po, ang good thing naman du’n, may entertainment ka. Lalo na ’pag sa work and pagod ka na, eh ’di pag pagod na lahat kami, lahat na lang kami tumatawa. Doon na lang namin nilalabas pagod namin,” Gwen says.

Another Pinoy Big Brother alumna, Gwen started out as a housemate before training to be part of BINI, which, for the uninitiated, is pretty much like the idol trainee system in South Korea where they all live together in the same house.

And as teenage girls of varying ages and backgrounds, this was not an easy challenge for the weak-willed. “Before, nu’ng bata bata pa ako, sabi ko, hindi ako ma-a-attach dito. Kasi never pa ako nagkaroon ng relationship na ganu’n katagal eh. Sabi ko, ay wala ’to. Hindi ’to magiging solid,” Gwen recalls. But then, like all mature love, feelings grow and deepen into something special. “Hindi ko ma-imagine na biglang mawala lang nang ganu’n. Hindi ko ma-imagine na in the future, totally makakalimutan ko ’yung girls.”

And part of that is always being open with each other, whether nonchalant or OA, communication is a big part of being a BINI.

STACEY’S RULE: “Maging prangka sa isa’t-isa.”
Stacey Sevilleja is an only child, so for her, being part of BINI meant finally having siblings to hang out with. “Na-realize ko po siya nu’ng talagang na-stuck na kami sa BINI House kasi parang, shocks, wala nang kawala ’to. Forever na ako magiging kasama sa buhay ng mga girls. And thankful ako kasi only child ako and binigyan ako ni Lord ng instant sisters,” Stacey recalls.

And thankful ako kasi only child ako and binigyan ako ni Lord ng instant sisters,” Stacey recalls.
And throughout their time together, BINI has gone through so many fun adventures, like asking servers in restaurants to play their songs when they would eat out after training. “Before po kasi… kapag kunwari ’pag na-tripan namin mag-K-BBQ… and then ’yung mga waiter parang ire-request po namin, ‘Play niyo po BINI.’ Those were the days.”

They’ve also had their fair share of tears and fights. And whenever she felt especially down, Stacey remembers how she would call on Mikha to hang out by the BINI House veranda to talk.

By now, all the girls practically know each other’s smells, quirks, and eccentricities so they can’t really hide when someone is mad or is feeling down so they just keep it real and tell each other when there’s something going on. “’Di dapat magtatago ng hinanakit. Sabihin right away. And I think ’yun naman ’yung ginagawa namin. ’Yun ’yung mabuti sa amin kasi lahat kami talagang straightforward. Walang halo-halong sugarcoating. Lahat sinasabi namin,” Stacey proudly says about her BINI sisters.

AIAH’S RULE: “Kung may problema sa group, it should stay within the group.”
Though she may be the oldest, Aiah Arceta had the least exposure to the K-Pop idol way of training so she had no idea that once she became part of BINI, it was going to be a full-on commitment. “I thought na… I would come here to Manila, and then, I would just be here for a couple of months, and then, maybe, come back to Cebu. Manila then Cebu. I brought luggage, but it was just two months of clothes and stuff,” she says about the start of her trainee days, thinking it was the usual Philippine showbiz route.

Slowly, though, she realized that being part of this group meant being in it for the long haul. But then, the COVID-19 pandemic happened, and for Aiah, that was when they truly got close to each other. Living together in one dorm amidst all the uncertainty of training, debuting, and a pandemic, meant that either they broke or they became closer than ever.

And while their debut single, “Da Coconut Nut,” didn’t necessarily light up the charts in 2020, communicating openly helped them solve whatever issues they had to face before they found their footing in the music world. “There’s eight of us girls, so, if we bring it outside, it’s just gonna double or triple the problem. So, whatever is inside, stays inside, and has to be fixed within the group.”

Through their GC (group chat), the girls of BINI say whatever needs to be said, be it a meme, a TikTok clip, or a problem with one of them.

COLET’S RULE: “Learn to say no.”
A big part of the loyal following that BINI has now is because of the Blooms that grew up and lived through the pandemic with them via their livestreams and videos. Because of these, various lore and stories have accumulated through the years since the group became active.

And it’s also through the livestreams that the girls were able to showcase their real, unfiltered personalities like Colet Vergara’s feisty, headstrong approach to life, thus earning her the nickname, Anger. “Lumaki po kasi ako sa environment na ganu’n po, in a good way naman,” Colet says about her strong personality. She admits that sometimes she gets easily triggered when she reads something about her and the group on X so she chose to just log out for good.

She shares, “In general na lang, parang napapaisip lang po siguro ako na bakit ganun ’yung pag-process ng ibang tao na… 'Talaga? Sasabihin mo ’yun [kahit] hindi mo kilala ’yung isang tao?'” And though these moments can sour one’s views on life as a popstar, Colet still feels surprised when she sees the massive support BINI gets from their fans.

But the main difference, now, is that girls can be more like Anger and say no to some things that might be bad for BINI as a whole. “As a group, nagagawa naman namin ’yan ngayon. And parang nagsasabihan naman po kami ng 'Guys, alam naman natin kung ano ’yung worth natin kahit as tao na lang, hindi na lang as BINI,'” she adds.

JHOANNA’S RULE: “Stay grounded.”
“Kaming BINI, iba ’yung bond namin. Parang ang impression kasi nu’ng iba sa amin, plastikan, sapawan. Hindi kami ganu’n eh,” Jhoanna Robles says about the deep ties they have as sisters. Though she’s one of the youngest among the girls, Jhoanna is also the group’s leader so she’s in charge of keeping everyone in line and informed about their schedules and responsibilities.

Though she’s one of the youngest among the girls, Jhoanna is also the group’s leader so she’s in charge of keeping everyone in line and informed about their schedules and responsibilities.
And while the girls love to joke around and make fun of her, they still show their appreciation for Jhoanna’s efforts. So whether she’s sending organized photo shoot decks via their GC or doing her iconic count off before their introductions, all the members know to follow and respect the chain of command.

So whether she’s sending organized photo shoot decks via their GC or doing her iconic count off before their introductions, all the members know to follow and respect the chain of command.
And also as the leader, Jhoanna makes it a point to remind the group to stay grounded. “Kasi ang paglaki ng ulo, hindi naman ’yan intentionally nangyayari diba? Unconsciously, nangyayari ’yan. P’wedeng sabihin mo, hindi lalaki ulo mo, pero unconsciously may mga nagagawa ka nang signs na may ganu’n ka,” she ponders.

But she knows that’s something that’s not going to happen with her and her fellow members because they always make it a point to be open with each other. “Kung mag-aaway kami, away talaga,” Jhoanna declares. “’Pag may gusto kang sabihin sa isang tao, sinasabi talaga kahit wala akong pakialam kung masasaktan ka as long as matututo ka. Ganu’n kami.”

MALOI’S RULE: “Always be complete on birthdays.”
It may seem that BINI popped out of nowhere and became famous overnight with their hit song, “Pantropiko.” But the real ones know that the girls have been here since 2020, grinding through so many battles together even before their debut. From good times like their tradition of giving kisses on birthdays to bad times like getting nasty comments for the most random of things online, it was never an easy journey for BINI. And that’s even harder for somebody as active online as Maloi Ricalde whose online antics before and during the “Pantropiko” era gave BINI the right nudge to be noticed by a wider Filipino audience. The downside, however, is that much attention often leads to unnecessary criticism.

“Tumatawa lang kami sa mga bashers namin,” Maloi says. But, of course, it’s not always rainbows and butterflies, even for a very positive person like her. “Siguro dahil sobrang pagod ako, (even) as Maloi na very cheerful… hindi ko na napigilan na isipin siya. Hindi ko napigilan na umiyak about it. Kasi nga, parang… ginagawa ko ’yung best ko. Work ako nang work, pero ganito ’yung nasasabi sa akin ng mga tao,” she recalls about a recent time when the criticism she faced seemed too much.

Thankfully, she has a strong support system in BINI. So after a good cry, she gets back up and continues with her busy schedule. “Magkakasama kami nag-iiyakan, magkakasama kami tumatawa, magkakasama kami [kahit] hirap na hirap… So parang doon ko na-realize na na this is gonna be one of the best highlights of my life... ito ’yung mga moments na ite-treasure ko talaga, forever.”

So while others may think that being with each other during birthdays seems like such a shallow ideal, it’s actually a promise that even if the time comes when some concerts are no longer sold-out shows and some posts no longer become viral, BINI will always be there.
