Get To Know Miss Universe 2023 Sheynnis Palacios
The first Miss Universe from Nicaragua is a mental health advocate and a TV host
Sheynnis Palacios is officially the 72nd Miss Universe! The 23-year-old’s winning performance was nothing short of phenomenal, and more importantly, historic.
She’s the first Miss Universe from Nicaragua and there’s no doubt that her win will shine the spotlight on her country, a Central American nation known for its stunning biodiversity and nature reserves.
Sheynnis herself has proven to be a lovely representative of Nicaragua thanks to her effortless charm and grace. She’s taking over Miss Universe duties from R'Bonney Gabriel, a Filipino-American who represented the United States in last year’s Miss Universe competition.

She’s a digital Miss U.
Sheynnis’ Mass Communication degree from the Universidad Centroamericana has given her skills to make her Miss Universe reign more relevant and far-reaching. She not only understands the influence of media on society but also creates her own video content. Sheynnis has talked about using her knowledge in these areas to widen her audience through modern ways of communication.
She’s open about mental health.
Several candidates in the 72nd Miss Universe competition spoke candidly about their mental health struggles and why they advocate for awareness on the subject. Sheynnis is one of these women, sharing that when she was 18 years old and a college student, she developed anxiety-related issues. This was why she created the “Understand Your Mind” project whose goal was to destigmatize discussions on mental health, especially for women.
She’s informed about feminist history.
She cited Mary Wollstonecraft as a woman that she looks up to during her final Q&A round. Mary Wollstonecraft was an English writer who was one of the first women in 18th-century English society to lobby for educational and social rights for fellow women. Sheynnis hopes to follow suit by proving that women in the 21st century no longer have limitations and are free to excel in any industry and that the gender-based economic gap has to be closed.
She’s not a pageant newbie.
She may be Nicaragua’s first Miss Universe, but she’s competed in other pageants before, beginning in her teens. Sheynnis vied for the Miss World 2021 title but failed to make it to the semi-finals. Despite not advancing at that pageant, now that she’s Miss Universe 2023, she’s given substance to her description of herself as a resilient woman.
She’s a TV personality.
Sheynnis has mentioned that she’s more comfortable as a producer or video editor, but this hasn’t stopped her from trying out on-camera roles. She joined the Nicaraguan television show Al Dia just this year as one of its hosts, an opportunity she uses to engage with her audience in issues that matter most to her.
