Kate Middleton And Meghan Markle At The Christmas Day Service—Who Had The More Expensive Ensemble?

Here’s another first for the soon-to-be royal Meghan Markle: attending the royal family’s traditional Christmas Day service.

Yesterday, Meghan made heads turn as she arrived at Sandringham, Queen Elizabeth II’s estate north of London, arm-in-arm with fiancé Prince Harry. The couple arrived at St. Mary’s Magdalene Church alongside the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Queen Elizabeth II and husband Prince Philip were also in attendance (they missed last year’s service due to flu), making this Meghan’s first public appearance with the Queen. With this, another tradition is broken by Meghan as she spent Christmas at Sandringham with the Queen even before she and Harry are married. Celebrations at the Queen’s estate are a privilege that is only meant for the members of the royal family. Kate wasn’t invited to celebrate Christmas with the royal family in 2010, because she and Prince William were yet to be married then. Same was the case with Mike Tindall, who was also prevented from joining the festivities until he was officially part of the royal family as Princess Anne’s daughter Zara’s husband. Experts say an exception was made with Meghan to avoid ill feelings with her, especially since her family is still in the US.

Now, let’s talk about the fabulous outfits of Meghan and Kate (who is expecting her third child with Prince William and is set to give birth in spring), shall we?

Meghan opted for a sophisticated, neutral, and well color-coordinated outfit with varying shades of brown. Good news to Meghan’s fans, her long coat is still available for pre-order. She topped off her outfit with a tan felt hat by the royal family’s favorite milliner, Philip Treacy. If you want to cop her look, we know where you can get the pieces from her outfit! Camel, wide collar wrap coat from Canadian brand Sentaler: appox. $1,440

Pixie suede and textured-leather bag from Chloe: $1,490

Snowflake large round jacket earrings from Birks: $5,995

Brown over-the-knee boots from Stuart Weitzman: approx. $922

Approximate total: $9,847 (this total still doesn’t include those leather gloves and Philip Treacy hat!)

Kate, on the other hand, was in the mood for a little more festive style with a red and green tartan coat that stylishly showcases her baby bump. Sadly, the coat is now sold out. She wore this statement coat with black tights and a fur hat.

Double-breasted tartan coat by Miu Miu: $2,197.50

Vallnord Alpaca Fur hat by Peruvian Connection: $990

Black clutch by Mulberry: approx. $725

Earrings by Kiki McDonough: her earrings are custom and they reportedly cost approx. $4,249

Black suede block-heeled pumps by Tod’s: approx. $490

Wow, way to go, Meghan! Sure, Kate made headlines for wearing a more expensive coat than Meghan for Christmas Day service, but it seems Meghan had the more expensive ensemble overall. This one is pretty close! Now that her almost-sister-in-law is making all these public appearances, Kate has found some serious competition, style-wise.
